Official Oblivion Remaster Confirmed Amidst Fan Project Skyblivion Development
Rumors of a Bethesda Oblivion remaster have solidified into near confirmation, following a leak from developer Virtuous Games. Images and box art surfaced online, seemingly validating the project. Interestingly, this development does not appear to deter progress on Skyblivion, the ambitious fan-made remake of Oblivion within the Skyrim engine. In fact, Skyblivion project lead Rebelzize suggests the official Oblivion remastered edition has no impact on their ongoing efforts.
Skyblivion Team Unfazed by Official Remaster Announcement
“To be clear this changes nothing for me,” Rebelzize stated via social media platform X.
“This has consistently been a passion endeavor and remains so until completion. For the gaming community, it’s a positive outcome—receiving two versions of Oblivion. We extend goodwill and respect to the team behind the official remaster.”
Skyblivion’s Potential to Rival Official Remaster
The emergence of an official Oblivion remaster raises an intriguing question: Could Skyblivion potentially match, or even surpass, Bethesda’s upgraded edition? While the official release will undoubtedly feature technical enhancements and improved user experience elements absent in Skyblivion, the fan project boasts impressive visuals and benefits from the dedication inherent in a labor of love.

Earlier this year, PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens, after experiencing a Skyblivion gameplay demonstration, remarked on this very point. “I’ll be honest,” Wolens noted, “while the prospect of an official re-release is appealing, I find it difficult to imagine it significantly outperforming this fan-driven undertaking.”
Passion Fuels Skyblivion’s Development
Speaking with VG247, Rebelzize reiterated that Skyblivion “originated from passion and continues to be driven by it.” He also voiced appreciation that Bethesda has not intervened to halt the fan project despite their own remaster being in development.
“This project has yielded more rewards than I initially anticipated—friendships, valuable experience, and the realization that I desired a career in the gaming industry, which I ultimately pursued,” he explained. “Ultimately, Skyblivion exists because of Bethesda’s implicit permission. Therefore, if the official remake is indeed genuine, we are grateful to have been allowed to proceed this far.”
Enthusiasm Remains for Both Oblivion Projects
Rebelzize appears genuinely unconcerned about the official Oblivion remaster overshadowing Skyblivion. “I hope you will find enjoyment in either the official remaster or our fan remake,” Rebelzize shared in a subsequent online message. “Regardless, thank you for your ongoing support, and please treat each other with kindness.”
Since this got a lot more attention then I expected let me just say I hope you will enjoy either the official or our remake. Either way thanks for the support and be kind to one another April 16, 2025
Release Timelines for Oblivion Remasters
Currently, neither Skyblivion nor the official Oblivion remaster possess definitive release dates. However, Skyblivion is tentatively scheduled for release sometime in 2025, while Bethesda’s official version could potentially emerge in the near future.
