Snow White Remake Faces Ban in Lebanon Amidst Political Tensions
Disney’s forthcoming Snow White adaptation has been prohibited from screening in Lebanon, joining a list of films facing censorship in non-Western nations. While past Disney movie bans have often stemmed from depictions of LGBT characters, this instance arises from a different source of contention.
Gal Gadot’s Support for Israel Sparks Ban
The controversy surrounding the Snow White remake centers on the casting of Israeli actress Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Gadot, known for her role in Wonder Woman, has publicly voiced her support for Israel, leading to the ban in Lebanon.
Lebanon’s Interior Minister, Ahmad Al-Hajjar, officially blocked the film’s release in the country. This decision is reportedly linked to the ongoing regional tensions and conflicts involving Israel and Hezbollah, which have resulted in civilian casualties.
Lebanon’s Boycott List and Previous Bans
According to a representative from Italia Films, a Middle Eastern film distributor, Gal Gadot has been included on Lebanon’s “Israel boycott list” for an extended period. Consequently, none of her previous movies have been released in Lebanese cinemas.
This precedent extends to other productions featuring Israeli actors. Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World, which includes Israeli actress Shira Haas in its cast, was similarly barred from being shown in Lebanon.
