US Missionary Pastor Josh Sullivan Rescued in Dramatic South African Police Operation

In a swift and decisive action, a US missionary pastor, who had been kidnapped and pistol-whipped during a church sermon in South Africa, was rescued in a dramatic police operation. A specialized unit of the South African Police Service, known as The Hawks, successfully ambushed the armed gang holding Pastor Josh Sullivan, 34, leading to a high-intensity shootout.

Heavily Armed Police Ambush Kidnappers

A heavily armed contingent of over 20 officers from The Hawks surrounded the gang’s hideout. Just as the kidnappers were transferring Pastor Sullivan to a different location, police moved in, initiating the rescue operation in KwaMagxai, Gqberha.

Shootout and Rescue Details

Upon sighting the officers, the kidnappers attempted to escape from the vehicle, opening fire. A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the death of all three kidnappers present at the scene.

Remarkably, officers, aware of Pastor Sullivan’s location inside the car, were able to effectively engage the suspects without harming the abducted missionary.

Police sources reported that the shootout was intense but concluded rapidly, within approximately 15 seconds. Despite the heavy gunfire, no officers sustained injuries.

Ongoing Investigation and Remaining Suspects

Authorities have confirmed that while three gang members were killed during the operation, an estimated three more suspects remain at large. Identification of the deceased is underway to aid in the pursuit of the remaining members of the criminal group.

Kidnapping Incident at Fellowship Baptist Church

The ordeal began when Pastor Sullivan was attacked at 7 pm at the Fellowship Baptist Church Motherwell in the Mandela Bay township, formerly Port Elizabeth. Four masked gunmen stormed the church during evening service.

Eyewitness accounts detail how, while two gunmen stood guard, another assaulted Pastor Sullivan with a handgun and forcibly removed him from the church. Simultaneously, other members of the gang robbed congregants present.

Police Spokesperson Account

Lieutenant Colonel Avela Fumba, spokesperson for The Hawks, stated that officers approaching the safe house observed suspicious activity around a parked vehicle.

“The suspects inside the vehicle attempted to flee and opened fire on the team, and officers responded, leading to a high-intensity shoot out and the 3 suspects were killed,” Fumba explained.

“The victim of the kidnapping was found inside the vehicle from which the suspects launched their attack but was miraculously unharmed and immediately assessed,” he added.

Medical personnel confirmed Pastor Sullivan was unharmed. According to Lt. Col. Fumba, Pastor Sullivan expressed his immediate desire to reunite with his family, a request police promptly facilitated.

Praise for Police Operation and Inter-Agency Cooperation

Lt. Col. Fumba highlighted the success of the operation as a testament to effective inter-agency collaboration and timely intelligence in combating serious organized crime within South Africa.

He commended the bravery and professionalism of all officers and support personnel involved in the safe rescue of Pastor Sullivan.

Ransom Demand and Family’s Ordeal

It was revealed that the kidnappers contacted Pastor Sullivan’s wife, Meagan, approximately 24 hours after the abduction, demanding a substantial ransom for his release. The chilling call was made while Mrs. Sullivan and her children were staying with friends for safety.

A police source indicated the ransom demand on Friday triggered the activation of The Hawks and the Anti-Gang-Unit, initiating an urgent effort to locate the kidnapped pastor.

The source further suggested that the gang’s motive extended beyond ransom, stating, “Mr. Sullivan knows too much to be simply let go.”

Community Support and Pastor’s Background

Pastor Mark Coffey, a US-based pastor at Fellowship Baptist Church, shared details of the kidnapping, stating the gunmen specifically targeted Pastor Sullivan after initially confronting his wife, Meagan, in front of their four children.

Following the abduction, Pastor Sullivan’s vehicle was discovered abandoned, and the family endured a period of fear and uncertainty until the ransom call.

Pastor Sullivan, originally from Maryville, Tennessee, moved to Gqeberha in 2018 as a ‘church planter,’ dedicated to establishing new Baptist congregations. He had previously completed a six-month internship in South Africa in 2015 and learned the local Xhosa language to better serve his community.

His dedication to the local community is widely acknowledged, with testimonials highlighting his deep connection to the Xhosa people.

Family’s Plea and Embassy Stance

Pastor Sullivan’s mother, Tonya Morton Rinket, appealed for prayers on social media and confirmed that US authorities were engaged in efforts to secure his release.

The US Embassy in South Africa has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident.

Rise in Kidnappings in South Africa

Reports indicate a significant surge in kidnappings in South Africa over the past decade, with a 260% increase. Ransom demands are increasingly viewed by criminals as a lucrative enterprise, often targeting affluent individuals.

While kidnapping statistics are high, a considerable portion involves non-ransom related cases, such as family disputes or human trafficking, rather than organized crime for financial gain.

South Africa faces significant challenges with violent crime, although incidents involving tourists remain relatively isolated.
