Mets Newcomer Justin Hagenman Achieves Major League Debut
MINNEAPOLIS – Relief pitcher Justin Hagenman experienced a significant milestone, making his Major League Baseball debut for the New York Mets in Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins. As he walked to the pitcher’s mound in the second inning at Target Field and initiated his warm-up throws, the reality of the moment struck him: he had officially become a big leaguer.
“This is Real”: Hagenman Reflects on Debut
“I registered, ‘Alright, this is real,’ ” the Mets right-hander commented following his team’s narrow 4-3 defeat to the Twins in ten innings. “And then you take the mound for the initial pitch, and here we go.” After seven seasons in the minor leagues, the 27-year-old Hagenman – signed by the Mets to a major league contract during the offseason – received his opportunity and delivered a solid performance on the mound.
Solid Performance in Relief
Called up from Triple-A Syracuse as a temporary roster addition while Griffin Canning was ill, Hagenman entered the game in relief of Huascar Brazobán. He pitched 3 ⅓ innings, conceding only one earned run on three hits and recording four strikeouts. “He provided exactly what we were asking of him,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza stated after the game, acknowledging Hagenman’s contribution.
Brief Stint Expected
Hagenman’s appearance is anticipated to be brief. He is expected to return to Syracuse. This move will likely coincide with placing Jose Siri on the injured list due to a fractured left tibia. This roster maneuver will enable the Mets to recall reliever Max Kranick, without adhering to the mandatory 15-day waiting period usually required after optioning a player to the minor leagues. Kranick was previously sent to Syracuse to create space on the active roster for Hagenman’s call-up.
Future Roster Adjustments
Following Hagenman’s expected option back to Triple-A, the Mets have the flexibility to recall another player from Syracuse, potentially José Azócar, to bolster their outfield depth. Canning is scheduled to pitch Thursday’s series opener versus the Cardinals at Citi Field. David Peterson, Kodai Senga, and Clay Holmes are slated to pitch the subsequent three games. The inclusion of a sixth starter in the rotation is designed to provide additional rest, particularly for Senga, during this stretch of 13 consecutive game days.

Looking Ahead to Future Opportunities
Despite understanding the current roster dynamics, Hagenman expressed optimism about future opportunities at the major league level. “This is definitively where you aspire to be,” Hagenman affirmed. “So regardless of what transpires, the focus is: How do we return? How can we remain here for an extended period and contribute as many games as possible with these teammates?”
“Being out there is the ultimate sensation,” he concluded. “So it’s about doing whatever we can, and now that I’ve experienced it, it’s everything it was envisioned to be and even more rewarding.”
