Romania’s Election: A Test for Russian Influence in Europe

Romania’s upcoming election in early May is being viewed as a crucial indicator of the reach of Russian influence within Europe. Voters are scheduled to go to the polls on May 4th for a repeat of the November election, which was invalidated due to alleged Russian meddling.

Concerns over Foreign Interference

In late 2024, far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, a previously obscure figure and known admirer of Vladimir Putin, unexpectedly won the first round of national elections. However, the Romanian Constitutional Court subsequently nullified the election due to apprehensions that Russia amplified his online campaign in an effort to establish a pro-Russian leadership. Following this, declassified documents from Romania’s security council revealed that the nation was the target of “aggressive hybrid Russian attacks” during the electoral process.

Rise of George Simion and Potential Implications

While Georgescu has been barred from participating in the new election, his replacement, George Simion, head of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), has surged ahead in opinion polls, causing alarm in Brussels.

Undecided Voters and Scope for Campaigning

Current polling data indicates that approximately 40% of Romanian voters are still undecided, creating significant scope for both campaigning and possible external interference.

Key Candidates in the May Election

Four candidates are considered to have a realistic chance of success in the May election:

  • Crin Antonescu, representing the governing party
  • Independent centrist Nicușor Dan
  • Left-leaning nationalist Victor Ponta

Each of these candidates has at different times polled second to Simion. However, it is noteworthy that these same polls did not foresee Georgescu’s success in the initial November election.

Romania’s Geopolitical Position

Romania became a member of the European Union in 2007 and is committed to adopting the Euro currency in the near future. However, the outcome of the upcoming election is viewed as a pivotal moment for Romania’s relationship with Western nations.

NATO Alliance and Regional Security

Given Romania’s NATO membership, the election of a candidate perceived as having a more lenient stance towards Russia carries considerable implications beyond Europe, particularly as the defensive alliance grapples with maintaining cohesion.

Simion’s Pro-Russian Stance Under Scrutiny

Simion has previously faced allegations of meeting with Russian intelligence operatives, claims he refutes. Furthermore, this potential future leader of a NATO member state is currently prohibited from entering Ukraine and Moldova due to his pronouncements regarding reclaiming territories.

AUR Leader’s Attempts to Distance Himself

Simion, as the AUR leader, has sought to distance himself from his pro-Russian image, recently describing Putin as a significant threat.

Concerns in Western Capitals

However, Simion is known to oppose further assistance to Ukraine, and the prospect of another NATO and EU leader perceived as sympathetic to Russia is likely to be causing considerable disquiet across numerous Western capitals.
