In late 2024, far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, a previously obscure figure and known admirer of Vladimir Putin, unexpectedly won the first round of national elections. While Georgescu has been barred from participating in the new election, his replacement, George Simion, head of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), has surged ahead in opinion polls, causing alarm in Brussels.
Undecided Voters and Scope for Campaigning
Current polling data indicates that approximately 40% of Romanian voters are still undecided, creating significant scope for both campaigning and possible external interference.
Key Candidates in the May Election
Four candidates are considered to have a realistic chance of success in the May election:
