Veurink to Lead Netherlands Women After Euros

Arjan Veurink, currently the assistant coach for the England women’s team, will depart his role following the European Championship in July to take over as head coach of the Netherlands women’s national team. This move marks a significant career progression for Veurink and a leadership change for the Dutch side.

New Chapter for Veurink

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) officially announced the appointment of Veurink, 38, as the successor to Andries Jonker, who has held the position since 2022. Veurink has signed a contract that extends through the 2029 European Championship, indicating a long-term commitment to the Dutch program.

Partnership with Wiegman

Veurink’s extensive experience alongside Sarina Wiegman has been instrumental in his career. Their collaboration began eight years ago, highlighted by their shared success with the Netherlands in the 2017 Euros and their journey to the 2019 World Cup final. He subsequently joined Wiegman in 2021 when she took charge of England. Together, they led England to victory in a major international tournament in 2022 and reached the 2023 World Cup final.

Veurink’s Ambition

“This appointment represents both a substantial challenge and an exciting new chapter,” Veurink stated. “It also feels like a natural progression in my professional journey. Becoming the head coach of the Dutch national team has always been an ambition of mine.”

He added, “Having gained over eight years of experience at the highest level working with Sarina Wiegman, I feel prepared to lead independently. The opportunity arising in the Netherlands makes it particularly meaningful. My immediate focus is to dedicate myself to England in the coming months, aiming to conclude our endeavors successfully, before embarking on this new role.”

We are delighted that he has accepted this challenge. We also extend our gratitude to the English Football Association for their cooperation during this transition.”

FA’s Acknowledgment

A spokesperson for the Football Association acknowledged Veurink’s departure, stating: “He remains a highly valued and respected member of Sarina’s coaching staff and is fully committed to the Lionesses’ current UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign and the upcoming summer tournament. We have considerable work ahead together still before we bid farewell.”
