Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story review – original rude girl is still impossibly cool

Importance Score: 25 / 100 🔵

Pauline Black of The Selecter: A Pioneering Voice in Ska Music

Pauline Black, the iconic vocalist of the influential ska band The Selecter, recounts her compelling personal narrative, stating, “I was never going to be a nice little white girl.” Her story encompasses a childhood as a mixed-race adoptee in 1960s Romford, east London, within a white family, and her ascent as the effortlessly cool frontwoman of The Selecter, a prominent act in the 2-Tone Records movement.

Known for her directness and sharp wit, Black humorously addresses her open marriage during the 1970s hippie era: “I did get the hump one time, when I came home, and she was using my frying pan.” She remains happily married to her husband.

Early Life and Overcoming Adversity

Adopted as an infant, Black’s formative years in Romford were marked by pervasive racism. “It would come at you like a slap,” she recalls. Even within her family, she remembers an uncle praising Enoch Powell, a controversial politician. At the age of 10, Black endured sexual abuse by a neighbor, met with an inadequate response from her parents. This challenging childhood fostered mistrust and isolation, leading her to find solace in piano practice and reading.

In 1979, while working as a radiographer in Coventry, The Selecter’s career surged, prompting her to change her name from Pauline Vickers to Pauline Black. “I don’t think my family ever forgave me,” she remarks.

The Selecter and 2-Tone Legacy

While not the most commercially successful band on 2-Tone Records, The Selecter held a groundbreaking position. With six out of seven members being people of color and fronted by a female singer, they were pioneers. DJ Don Letts recognizes Black as the “first lady of 2 Tone.” Today, she continues to embrace her signature 70s “rude girl” style, characterized by tailored boy’s suits and pork pie hats.

After three years, Black departed from the band, exploring acting and television presenting before The Selecter eventually reformed. She co-wrote a documentary, and while some might suggest a strong authorial presence, her desire to narrate her story on her terms is understandable considering her personal history.
