NASCAR Cup Series Eyes Return to Rockingham Speedway

North Carolina’s Rockingham Speedway, a historic venue in motorsports, is potentially on track for a resurgence onto the NASCAR Cup Series calendar. Following its successful re-entry into NASCAR circuits this season with upcoming Xfinity Series and Craftsman Truck Series races, the prospect of top-tier racing at “The Rock” is gaining momentum.

Xfinity and Truck Series Races Pave the Way

This weekend is pivotal for Rockingham Speedway as it prepares to host both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and Craftsman Truck Series. The performances and reception of these races are widely viewed as crucial indicators for a possible Cup Series comeback to the speedway in the near future.

History of Rockingham and NASCAR Departure

For four decades, Rockingham Speedway was a mainstay on the prestigious NASCAR Cup Series schedule. However, in 2004, the relationship between NASCAR and the speedway ended. The circuit was removed from the calendar due to delays in planned upgrades and criticism from drivers regarding the track’s condition.

Penske’s Plans and NASCAR’s Exit

Prior to NASCAR‘s departure, Roger Penske acquired the facility in 1997. His vision included significant renovations and increased spectator capacity. However, NASCAR‘s decision to cease racing at Rockingham Speedway effectively halted these ambitions. The track has remained without a major NASCAR event since 2004.

New Ownership Revitalizes the Speedway

In 2018, a group of investors, spearheaded by Dan Lovenheim, purchased the aging speedway. The new ownership immediately embarked on a transformation project, aiming to convert the site into a versatile, multi-purpose complex.

Lovenheim’s Vision Realized with NASCAR Return

From the outset, Lovenheim expressed a strong desire to reinstate Rockingham Speedway to the NASCAR circuit as rapidly as feasible. His dedication and investment are now yielding results, evidenced by the upcoming hosting of Xfinity and Craftsman Truck races this year.

Lovenheim’s Perspective

Reflecting on the journey, Lovenheim remarked recently, “When I acquired it, the property was considered untouchable. Now, we are on the verge of hosting both NASCAR Xfinity and Truck Series competitions next month.”

NASCAR’s Perspective on Rockingham’s Future

NASCAR‘s Ben Kennedy has voiced enthusiasm regarding the forthcoming races at Rockingham. He commented, “We are genuinely excited to return. Discussions with Bob Sargent, the event promoter, indicate they are fully engaged in preparations. We intend to assess the performance over the initial years, and if successful, Rockingham will certainly be a viable contender for future consideration.”

Kennedy on Event Success

Kennedy further noted the positive indicators: “Ticket sales are very encouraging, and significant corporate backing has been secured for the event.”

Strategic Schedule Planning and Future Cup Events

Addressing the broader schedule, Kennedy stated regarding the Cup Series, “We are currently developing our schedule through 2031.” He emphasized the high level of interest in introducing races in both existing and new markets. “More than ever,” Kennedy added, “we must adopt a deliberate and strategic approach to any schedule modifications, as the addition of a new event necessitates adjustments elsewhere.”

Potential for Sooner Cup Series Return

Despite the long-term schedule planning, a strong showing from both the Craftsman Truck Series and Xfinity Series races this weekend could expedite Rockingham Speedway‘s re-entry onto the NASCAR calendar, potentially well in advance of 2031. The upcoming races are crucial for demonstrating the speedway’s viability for top-tier NASCAR competition once again.
