Duchess of Sussex Opens Up About Miscarriage on Podcast

During the second episode of “Confessions of a Female Founder,” released Tuesday, Meghan Markle engaged in a conversation with Saujani that centered on reshaping professional environments for women and managing grief.

“And I’ll raise this topic, if you feel comfortable discussing it, because I am aware you’ve spoken publicly about it in connection with Girls Who Code—the various interpersonal experiences you were navigating at that time—and the miscarriages you’ve been through,” Meghan stated.

Continuing the dialogue, Meghan affirmed, “I’ve discussed the miscarriage we went through.” She further elaborated on the emotional process of detachment and acceptance that accompanies such a profound loss. “I believe there’s a parallel in learning to detach from something you held immense promise and hope for, and reaching a point of acceptance in letting go of something you intended to cherish for a lifetime,” she reflected.

Details of the 2020 Pregnancy Loss

The Duchess first publicly revealed the miscarriage that occurred in July 2020 in a deeply personal opinion piece published by the New York Times in November of the same year. Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, are parents to Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3.

Reshma Saujani’s Empathetic Response

Saujani, who has personally experienced multiple miscarriages stemming from autoimmune issues, described Meghan’s words as profoundly insightful, expressing that Markle articulated feelings and experiences as if directly from her own journal entries.

“I don’t believe anyone has perceived it that way, or articulated it in that manner for me,” Saujani remarked. She proceeded to recount her personal journey of emotionally detaching from the devastating news of her own pregnancy losses.

Saujani shared an instance where, despite the heartbreak, she felt compelled to maintain professional commitments. “And I should have simply returned home to rest and find solace with my husband. Instead, I would pause, take a breath, and then appear in a living room, on a stage, and simply perform.”

She further explained that the overwhelming emotional toll led her to temporarily delegate her business responsibilities to her team for several months, seeking respite after a series of miscarriages.

The Courage to Seek Support

Meghan emphasized to Saujani the significance of “courage” in seeking help when facing such challenges.

“And there is absolutely no way to consistently appear and serve as a role model for these young women…if you are not operating with complete authenticity because you are on the verge of burnout,” she concluded, highlighting the importance of self-care and vulnerability in leadership.
