Pop Star Katy Perry Soars to New Heights with Blue Origin Spaceflight

Chart-topping musical artist Katy Perry experienced an out-of-this-world adventure, becoming the latest celebrity to journey into space. The “Firework” singer joined author and former journalist Lauren Sanchez aboard Blue Origin‘s successful NS-31 mission on Monday. This suborbital flight further fuels the growing trend of space tourism.

All-Female Crew Makes History

The diverse and accomplished all-female crew also included aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyễn, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and CBS host Gayle King. Media mogul Oprah Winfrey, a close friend of King, was present at the launch as a spectator.

Prior to liftoff, the crew traveled to the launchpad in Rivian electric vehicles and ascended via elevator to board the crew capsule. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and Blue Origin, personally escorted the women to the rocket. The spaceflight itself lasted approximately 11 minutes. During their brief time in microgravity, Perry reportedly serenaded the crew with “What a Wonderful World,” although the livestream audio experienced some disruptions.

Echoes of Space History

This mission marked a significant milestone as the first all-female spaceflight since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s groundbreaking solo voyage in 1963. Tereshkova holds the distinction of being the first woman to ever journey into space.

Bezos’s Tumble and Wendy’s Playful Jab

Sanchez, engaged to Jeff Bezos, was greeted by him at the landing site following the flight. However, the reunion took an unexpected turn when Bezos reportedly stumbled in a small depression, nearly falling face-first. The incident quickly became a viral sensation on social media.

One user on social media platform X humorously commented about replaying Bezos’s near fall repeatedly.

In a surprising and lighthearted move, fast-food chain Wendy’s, known for its witty social media presence, playfully targeted Perry after her return to Earth. The company posted a photo of Perry kissing the ground, captioning it with a modified lyric from her 2008 hit, “I Kissed a Girl,” “I kissed the ground and i liked it.”

When another X user questioned the brevity of Perry’s space trip, asking if it was “only up there for like 10mins, right?” Wendy’s account responded with a sarcastic, “don’t short change her it was 11 minutes.”

Relive Katy Perry’s Space Adventure

The New Shepard spacecraft launched from West Texas around 8:30 a.m. Central Time on Monday. For those interested in witnessing the mission, a replay of Blue Origin’s livestream is available on YouTube.

Defining the Boundaries of Space

Blue Origin

The definition of “space” is a subject of ongoing discussion. While there is general agreement that the International Space Station resides in space, the classification of commercial suborbital rocket flights, like those operated by Blue Origin, remains less clear-cut. The Karman line, an imaginary boundary located 62 miles (100 kilometers) above Earth’s surface, is often cited as a key demarcation.

According to NASA, while “there’s really no clear boundary between where Earth’s atmosphere ends and outer space begins,” the Karman line is broadly recognized by scientists as the transition point to outer space. Therefore, barring overly technical arguments, Perry and her fellow crew members did indeed experience a brief sojourn into space during their mission.

After the spacecraft surpassed the Karman line, the crew experienced weightlessness. The return to Earth involved a gentle, parachute-assisted landing of the crew capsule.

New Shepard’s Human Spaceflight Program

This flight marked the 11th human mission for the New Shepard program. To date, Blue Origin has launched 52 individuals into space, including “Star Trek” icon William Shatner, “Good Morning America” host Michael Strahan, and Jeff Bezos himself.
