French Prisons Targeted in Overnight Attacks
A series of overnight attacks have targeted several correctional facilities across France, according to the Justice Minister. These incidents involved acts of intimidation, ranging from arson targeting vehicles to gunfire from automatic weapons.
Multiple Locations Affected
Reports indicate that vehicle fires erupted in numerous prison parking areas. In Toulon, a prison was specifically targeted by automatic weapon fire. La Parisien newspaper listed six penal establishments that were subjected to these attacks, including facilities in Toulon, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Valence, Nîmes, Luynes, Villepinte, and Nanterre.
Justice Minister Responds
Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he is traveling to Toulon to express solidarity with the affected prison personnel. While not directly assigning responsibility for the assaults, Darmanin stated that the French government is actively addressing the issue of drug trafficking and implementing measures intended to significantly disrupt criminal networks involved.
Prison Guard Union Expresses Concern
FO Justice, a prison guard union, conveyed its “deep concern and anger” regarding the “extremely serious” overnight events. The union utilized X to share updates on the aftermath of several attacks, posting images showing bullet marks on windows at the Toulon prison and charred vehicles in other prison parking lots.
