Page Astounded by ‘Routine’ Double Maximum at World Championship Qualifier

In an unprecedented display of skill, Jackson Page nonchalantly described compiling two maximum breaks in a single World Championship qualifying match as feeling ‘routine’. The 23-year-old snooker player progressed to the final qualifying round after a dominant performance, securing a 10-2 victory over Allan Taylor.

Historic Snooker Achievement

This remarkable feat marks the first instance of any snooker competitor achieving two maximum 147 breaks within the same match in a professional tournament. Prior to this exceptional display, the Welshman had never recorded a maximum break in his career, and is now set to secure at least £147,000 in prize money as a result of this historic achievement.

Understated Reaction to Unprecedented Feat

When questioned about his historical accomplishment, Page delivered a remarkably composed response. He stated plainly, “It felt routine out there in the end.” This understated reaction belies the magnitude of such an unparalleled feat in professional snooker.

Practice Makes Perfect

Expanding on his performance, Page explained, “I’ve made a lot of 147s leading up to this event in the club… I’m absolutely thrilled to have accomplished it in a competitive match. I never usually attempt maximum breaks during matches; I reserve that for practice. At the club, if I’m on the black, I might consider going for a 147. In a professional setting, the focus is always on winning the frame. However, after achieving the first maximum break yesterday, I felt compelled to attempt the second. It paid off, and perhaps I’ll start pursuing them more frequently now.”

Two Maximums, Separate Days

While Page’s two 147 breaks occurred during the same qualifying match, they were recorded on separate days. The snooker professional achieved the initial maximum break in the eighth frame on Sunday evening and then returned on Monday to complete another in the final frame of the day’s session.

Final Qualification Hurdle Awaits

Despite his record-breaking performance, Page still faces a significant challenge to qualify for the main draw next week in Sheffield. The 23-year-old is scheduled to compete against Joe O’Connor in the fourth and final qualifying match. Successfully navigating this hurdle against the Englishman would mark Page’s qualification for consecutive World Championship main draws for the first time in his professional career.

Past Crucible Appearances

Page participated in the previous year’s main draw at the Crucible Theatre but was eliminated in the first round by Ronnie O’Sullivan, suffering a 10-1 defeat against the seven-time world champion. His debut World Championship appearance at the Crucible was in 2022, where he defied expectations by overcoming ninth seed Barry Hawkins in the opening round, before being defeated by eventual semi-finalist Mark Williams in the second round.

Championship Commences in Sheffield

The World Championship action from Sheffield is set to commence on Saturday, with reigning champion Kyren Wilson scheduled to inaugurate the tournament. Notably, the event could also mark the return to competitive snooker for Ronnie O’Sullivan, who has been absent from tournaments since early January due to reported ‘medical reasons’.
