Olivia Wilde Expresses Disdain for Katy Perry’s Space Voyage Aboard Blue Origin
Olivia Wilde has voiced her disapproval of Katy Perry and the all-female Blue Origin crew’s recent spaceflight. The actress publicly shared a meme critical of the mission, joining a chorus of voices questioning the value of celebrity space tourism. This comes amid ongoing debates about resource allocation and priorities, as highlighted by other public figures including Olivia Munn, who previously questioned the significance of such endeavors.
Wilde’s Social Media Critique
Following the Blue Origin mission, Wilde, 41, utilized her Instagram Story on Monday, April 14, to disseminate a meme that satirized the space venture. The meme, originally posted by @betches, presented a comedic take on Blue Origin’s activities.
The selected meme featured a juxtaposed image of Perry, 40, emerging from the spacecraft post-orbit, alongside a snapshot of her kissing the ground. The meme’s text humorously read, “Getting off a commercial flight in 2025,” suggesting a mundane comparison to the extraordinary space journey.
Adding her perspective, Wilde commented, “Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess,” implying skepticism about the mission’s significance relative to its cost.

Perry’s Space Expedition and Crew
Perry was among six women who embarked on the Blue Origin spaceflight. The celebrated singer was accompanied by notable personalities including Gayle King, host of CBS Mornings, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen, and Lauren Sánchez, fiancée of Jeff Bezos.
During their time in orbit, Perry reportedly entertained her fellow astronauts with a rendition of “What a Wonderful World,” a performance lauded by King, 70, as a highlight of the trip.
King recounted on Blue Origin’s Monday launch X livestream, “We’ve been asking her to sing constantly, and she declined. Everyone requested ‘Roar’ or ‘Firework,’ but she emphasized, ‘It’s not about me. I wanted to speak about the world.'”
Public Scrutiny of Space Tourism
Wilde’s critique aligns with sentiments previously voiced by other figures. Earlier in April, Olivia Munn also publicly questioned the necessity of such space excursions.
During a Today with Jenna and Friends appearance, Munn, 44, remarked, “I understand this might be an unpopular viewpoint, but there are numerous pressing global issues demanding attention. What is the intended purpose of space travel in this context? What tangible benefits does it offer?”
Munn further elaborated on her position, highlighting the substantial financial outlay associated with space tourism at a time when many face economic hardship. “What is the objective? Is it merely a ‘historic ride?’ It appears somewhat excessive,” she stated. “Historically, space exploration aimed to advance knowledge and benefit humanity. What advancements for those of us on Earth are they pursuing up there?”

Defending the Blue Origin Mission
Following some negative feedback, both King and Sánchez, 55, have defended their participation in the space mission. King asserted in a statement to People that “any criticism stems from a lack of understanding of the broader implications of this endeavor.”
She further stated, regarding public perception, “The overwhelmingly positive response, particularly from young women and girls, underscores the symbolic importance of this mission.”
Sánchez expressed a desire to engage with critics directly, inviting them to witness the Blue Origin project firsthand. “I would welcome them to Blue Origin to meet the thousands of dedicated employees who are passionately committed to this mission,” she said. “They are deeply invested in their work and its purpose. Dismissive comments overlook the significant effort involved. I encourage skeptics to visit, to understand the profound and eye-opening nature of this undertaking.”
