Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence Damaged in Arson Attack; Extent of Fire Damage Revealed
Recent images emerging from within the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg depict the significant destruction resulting from an arson attack that engulfed the historic mansion. The incident at Governor Josh Shapiro’s home is under investigation following the intentional fire.
Early Morning Blaze at Historic Residence
The fire ignited at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Sunday. Governor Shapiro’s family was inside the residence at the time. All occupants were promptly and safely evacuated from the state-owned mansion. Despite the swift evacuation, the fire escalated, causing extensive damage including severe charring to wallpaper and flooring, and melting furniture in multiple rooms before emergency responders successfully extinguished the flames.
Detailed Fire Damage Documented
Photographs taken by Governor Shapiro’s security personnel document the comprehensive scope of the fire’s impact. While certain items, such as light fixtures and cutlery used during the Passover Seder the previous evening, remained surprisingly intact, large sections of the residence now resemble a disaster zone as a result of the intense blaze.
A dining area, part of which hosted Saturday evening’s Seder celebration, was found remarkably undamaged with only minor disruptions like overturned chairs. However, an adjacent room was severely impacted, exhibiting extensive black soot coverage and extensively burned furniture.

Historic Residence and Prior Incidents
The Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence was inaugurated in 1968. Its construction was delayed for twenty-five years following World War II, according to official state records. Governor Raymond Shafer and his spouse were the first family to reside in the mansion.
Second Emergency Evacuation in Residence History
Governor Shapiro’s emergency evacuation marks only the second such occurrence in the history of the Governor’s Residence.
In 1972, Hurricane Agnes caused significant flooding, resulting in approximately five feet of water within the residence. Restoration efforts following the hurricane required two years.
Uncertainty Surrounds Repair Timeline
The duration required for repairs following this arson attack remains unclear. It is also uncertain to what extent materials and features damaged by the fire can be salvaged and restored.
Suspect Arrested in Arson Investigation
Cody Balmer, a 38-year-old individual, has been apprehended as the suspect connected to the arson attack. He was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon.
According to reports, Cody Balmer allegedly scaled a security fence and launched a homemade incendiary device towards the residence to initiate the fire. He then reportedly fled the scene, successfully evading law enforcement until his subsequent arrest.
Suspect to Face Multiple Felony Charges
Authorities have announced that Balmer is expected to face a range of serious felony charges including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault against specified individuals.
Motive Under Investigation; Antisemitism Possible Factor
Law enforcement agencies are operating under the premise that the attack was “targeted,” although details concerning a potential motive have not yet been publicly released. Governor Shapiro, who is Jewish, has raised the possibility that antisemitism may have been a motivating factor in the attack. However, investigators have stated that they are unable to either confirm nor deny this possibility at this stage of the investigation.
“If the intent was to terrorize our family, our friends, the Jewish community who joined us for Passover Seder, let me state clearly: we celebrated our faith last night proudly, and we will continue to celebrate Passover,” Governor Shapiro affirmed at a press briefing held Sunday afternoon.
