Lauren Sánchez Shares Hilarious Joke Before Blue Origin Spaceflight

Television personality Lauren Sánchez recently disclosed a lighthearted joke she made to her fiancé, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, before her voyage to space aboard a Blue Origin spacecraft. Sánchez was a crew member on Blue Origin’s historic NS-31 mission, the company’s first all-female flight to suborbital space.

A Pre-Flight Quip for Jeff Bezos

Following her return to Earth after the brief but impactful space excursion, the Emmy Award-winning journalist, 55, recounted the playful remark she directed at Bezos, 61, prior to her participation in the groundbreaking Flight NS-31.

Reflecting on her final moments with Bezos before liftoff – the man who established Blue Origin in 2000 – the former Good Day LA anchor remembered “seeing Jeff beforehand” and thinking, “Oof.”

“You know, like, I had to come back — I mean, we’re getting married. If I didn’t return, it would be quite a disappointment for me,” she explained to Charissa Thompson in a recent interview.

Thompson then revealed the jest Sánchez shared with her before the emotional, eight-minute space journey.

“You quipped, ‘Jeff, if you’re reconsidering marrying me, you don’t have to send me to space,'” Thompson recalled Sánchez saying.

Laughing in response, Sánchez confirmed and elaborated, “You really don’t have to send me to space if you don’t want to marry me!”

Historic All-Female Space Crew

Sánchez journeyed to space alongside a distinguished group of women, including singer Katy Perry, TV presenter Gayle King, civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen, former rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn.

Reflections on the Space Voyage

Upon reflecting on her space voyage, Sánchez described the experience as filled with “joy and camaraderie” and a profound sense of “gratefulness,” emphasizing, “It was a feeling of, ‘We’re doing this.'”

Describing her view from space, she stated, “Earth looked so… it was incredibly serene. It was simply quiet.”

“I don’t believe words can truly capture it. It was tranquil yet vibrantly alive. Observing Earth from that perspective instills the realization that ‘We’re all in this together’ — more interconnected than we often perceive.”

Blue Origin’s Pioneering Mission

This Blue Origin mission marked a significant milestone as the first all-female spaceflight since 1963 and the only all-women crew to date. The team ascended to an altitude of 100 kilometers (62 miles) above Earth, successfully crossing the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space.

During the capsule’s period of freefall, the crew experienced approximately three to four minutes of weightlessness and were treated to awe-inspiring panoramic views of Earth.

Reimagining the Space Suit

Earlier in the week, Sánchez discussed with The New York Times her role in designing the distinctive blue spacesuits for the mission, expressing her desire to “reimagine the flight suit.”

After touching back down to Earth, the Emmy Award-winning journalist, 55, revealed the cheeky comment she made to her husband-to-be, 61, prior to embarking onto her historic expedition to space with Flight NS-31

Before her emotional, eight-minute trip, former Good Day LA host told her man that he didn’t have to send her to space if he no longer wanted to marry her

As she reflected on her voyage, Sánchez said: ‘It was a feeling of joy and camaraderie. It was a feeling of gratefulness. It was a feeling of, “We’re doing this”‘

“Typically, standard flight suits are designed with men in mind,” she explained. “They are then modified to accommodate a woman’s figure.”

Sánchez asserted, “I believe these suits are not only elegant but also introduce a touch of flair to space travel.”

Space Suit Design Collaboration

Approximately five months prior to the flight, the journalist contacted Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, co-founders of the fashion label Monse and creative directors at Oscar de la Renta, who also designed her attire for the 2024 Met Gala.

They eagerly agreed to contribute to the design of the space suits.

Sánchez ventured to space with singer Katy Perry, TV presenter Gayle King, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, former rocket scientist Aisha Bowe and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn

Glamour in Space

In a joint interview with Elle Magazine, the entire crew revealed their plans to have hair and makeup professionally styled for the flight, complementing their stylish space attire.

“Who wouldn’t want to be glamorous before a spaceflight?” Sánchez playfully remarked, while Perry enthusiastically declared, “Space is finally going to be glamorous.”

The pop star further added, “Let me tell you something. If it were possible to bring glamor into space, I absolutely would. We are going to put the ‘a**’ in astronaut,” she quipped.

Blue Origin’s Space Tourism Milestone

Since 2021, Blue Origin has successfully transported 52 individuals to the edge of space across 10 human spaceflights. Jeff Bezos himself was among the crew on Blue Origin’s inaugural human flight, marking the beginning of their space tourism endeavors.
