How Bloom & Rage: Lost Records Tape 2 takes a dark and supernatural turn on April 15

Importance Score: 45 / 100 🔵

The narrative adventure Lost Records: Bloom & Rage Tape 2 from Don’t Nod is set to launch on April 15, day one on the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, continuing the captivating story that began with a dramatic cliffhanger. Following the massive discovery and unsettling revelation from the first episode, players eagerly anticipate the next chapter in this choice-driven, nostalgia-infused experience. Fans are keen to understand what awaits Swann, Nora, Autumn, and Kat as their summer saga progresses.

Insights into Tape 2: Rage

To delve deeper into the game’s development and offer greater understanding into the upcoming events for Swann and her companions, Michel Koch, Creative Director at Don’t Nod Montreal, shared his insights.

Koch expressed enthusiasm to describe the differences between this episode and its predecessor. “Tape 1, ‘Bloom,’ embodies the pleasant and bright opening of summer, focused on the initial meeting and bonding among the girls. ‘Rage,’ the title of the second part, directly addresses the consequences of the cliffhanger encountered at the close of Tape 1. Our objective for Tape 1 was to allow players to establish their place within the friend group, experience the atmosphere of a summer of forming friendships, while subtly introducing elements of mystery. Discovering the clearing, finding the abyss—it’s a natural progression for four friends enjoying a summer together before Swann’s departure.”

“Tape 2, however, will place greater emphasis on the enigmatic aspects of the narrative. Players are aware of the summer’s outcome and the promise of separation, yet the reasons remain unclear. The mysterious box and Kat’s situation are known, but the repercussions of the revelation are not. The question becomes, how does one maintain a semblance of normalcy during summer with these unresolved issues and the ongoing strange occurrences in the forest?

These supernatural elements will gain prominence. My personal preference is to integrate supernatural themes and surrealism into the core story of our characters. This approach allows for a darker, more peculiar atmosphere while keeping the focus on character development. This distinctive vibe will intensify, playing a significant role in the story’s resolution.”

Pacing will also see an increase in this installment. “Tape 2 definitely accelerates the rhythm,” Koch affirmed. “Following the events concerning Kat at the concert’s end, Tape 2 commences the subsequent day. Swann grapples with a sense of culpability, despite not being directly at fault, for placing her friends in harm’s way. The narrative will advance through August, culminating in the concluding events. Therefore, anticipate a quicker pace and heightened stakes.”

Koch highlighted the increased visibility of player choices from Tape 1 on the unfolding story. “Numerous choices were presented in the first Tape: interactions, fostering closer relationships with certain girls, and decisions during pivotal moments like the ritual or at the abyss. Reactions to Corey and Dylan, choices between cautious or more reckless behavior—these will significantly influence the direction of Tape 2.”

The Camcorder’s Evolving Role

A standout feature of Tape 1 was the camcorder, a constant companion for protagonist Swann as she documented life in Velvet Cove, Michigan. Players could record objects of interest as collectibles or create personal mini-movies through editing. Importantly, the camcorder also served as a key component in both plot progression and gameplay at various points.

When questioned about the camcorder’s function in Tape 2, Koch elaborated, “We are developing its role further. We envisioned it as Swann’s ‘weapon’ or ‘shield.’ She uses it to observe others, but also as a means of self-protection. We aimed to make filming engaging, reminiscent of the 90s, and to link these mechanics to other game features.”

“In Tape 2, expect more unconventional instances where the camcorder is crucial: solving puzzles, deciphering clues, or completing objectives. There’s an innovative twist involving the camcorder and player-created videos which, without revealing spoilers, should deeply resonate with users. The manner in which you film within the game will become narratively significant, forging a strong connection between your recordings and personal gameplay experience.”

Regarding puzzle frequency in Tape 2, Koch confirmed an increase compared to the first part. “Tape 2 features puzzles that I find particularly compelling. One, in particular, functions as a narrative puzzle, blending interaction, exploration, and dialogue. Its appeal lies in utilizing our narrative design elements—dialogue choices and character knowledge—to advance situations, not merely through object retrieval, but through interpersonal understanding, leveraging dialogue and the camcorder as primary tools.”

Reunion and Resolution

Concerning the present-day narrative involving the friends’ reunion in a bar 27 years later, Koch stated, “This segment will largely remain within the bar setting. We need to finalize the process of recalling the past. Opening the box will be a pivotal scene. There are four distinct major endings for the present-day storyline, with variations depending on player choices. These conclusions will extend beyond the bar, offering glimpses into the town’s present state, 27 years into the future.”

He clarified that the bar setting was foundational to the game’s concept. “Our initial pitch centered on evoking the sentiment of reuniting with long-unseen friends, engaging in conversations, revisiting shared history, and exploring the possibility of reconnection in the present. The concept of a bar, restaurant, or room as a setting for reconnection emerged – sometimes reunions resonate seamlessly, other times they are uncertain, testing the bounds of friendship. This narrative aspect intrigued me. Within these confines, dialogue is necessitated; facing each other compels reflection on the past.”

In closing, Koch offered a message to players: “To all players, thank you for experiencing Tape 1. I hope Tape 2 fulfills and surpasses expectations regarding the narrative’s direction. I also anticipate Tape 2 will contain surprises regarding the game’s trajectory. We hope players appreciate how relationship and morality choices from Tape 1 influence subsequent events. The unfolding events in Tape 2 aim to surprise and satisfy, culminating in a rewarding conclusion to the journey. For newcomers, I hope they will connect with the characters, enjoy interacting with the girls, and become engrossed in the story and the summer we’ve crafted.”
