FAA Grounds New York Helicopter Tour Company After Fatal Hudson River Crash

Following last week’s fatal incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued an emergency order to ground New York Helicopter Charter, the company operating the sightseeing tour helicopter that crashed into the Hudson River. The crash tragically resulted in the death of all six individuals aboard. The agency announced the operational halt on Monday, emphasizing safety concerns after the deadly New York helicopter crash.

Company Operations Suspended Due to Safety Concerns

The FAA’s emergency action to suspend New York Helicopter Charter’s operations was prompted, in part, by the dismissal of the company’s director of operations. This personnel change raised immediate concerns regarding the company’s adherence to safety protocols and operational oversight, leading to the grounding order.

Details of the Hudson River Helicopter Incident

The helicopter, identified as a Bell 206 model, went down into the Hudson River at 3:17 p.m. last Thursday, according to official reports. The crash occurred during what was intended to be a routine New York City tour.

Victims Identified in Tragic Accident

Among those killed in the Hudson River helicopter crash were Siemens executive Agustín Escobar, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three children. The pilot, Sean Johnson, also perished in the accident.

Voluntary Flight Suspension Preceded FAA Order

Prior to the FAA’s mandatory grounding, New York Helicopter Charter had already voluntarily ceased flight operations in the immediate aftermath of the deadly crash. This voluntary suspension came before the official order from the FAA.

Ongoing Investigation and Operational Review

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. In addition to the grounding order, the FAA has initiated a comprehensive review of New York Helicopter Charter’s operational practices. This review, known as the Certificate Holder Evaluation Program, will further scrutinize the company’s safety procedures and overall operations.
