Negligent Homicide Charges
Prior to his death, Lacy was already facing criminal charges related to a deadly car accident in Louisiana last December. These charges had significantly impacted his professional football aspirations.
The incident, which resulted in the death of a 78-year-old man in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, involved Lacy allegedly driving recklessly. Reports suggest he was speeding and illegally passing in a no-passing zone when a motorist swerving to avoid Lacy’s Dodge Charger collided head-on with another vehicle.
Herman Hall of Thibodaux, the driver involved in the head-on collision, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a medical facility, according to a state police report.
State Police Troop C in Gray, Louisiana, indicated that Lacy left the scene of the crash without seeking assistance. He was later arrested and charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless operation of a vehicle on January 13.
Father’s Mental Health Warning
Following Kyren Lacy’s death, his father, Kenny Lacy, publicly addressed young parents with a somber warning about mental health.
Lacy, 24, was arrested on January 13 after an arrest warrant was issued by local police
‘Young parents, start communicating with your children from a young age and ensure they feel secure and comfortable confiding in you,’ he shared on Facebook. ‘Don’t accept ‘I’m Alright’ or ‘I’m good’ at face value if you sense something is amiss. Mental Health is a serious concern, often unseen, so do not disregard the indicators, regardless of how minor they may appear.’
‘Our lives are irrevocably altered, and this will never be acceptable, but God must have needed my son more than he was needed here. This is an immense burden for our families to bear, yet I believe the love and empathy within our families will sustain us. It will not become easier, but we will learn to live with it.’
‘Prioritize your children’s mental well-being!!!!!!!!!’
Legal Proceedings and Defense Response
Lacy’s case was scheduled for a grand jury hearing on Monday, less than two days after his reported death.
However, his legal representative issued a strong statement after Lacy’s death, accusing police of a ‘witch hunt’ and describing the charges against his client as an ‘excessive and targeted endeavor’.
‘It is with deep regret that we confirm the unfortunate passing of Kyren Lacy. We respectfully request that the public and media provide his family with the privacy and space necessary to grieve this unimaginable loss in peace,’ Lacy’s lawyer stated.
‘Kyren’s case was scheduled to be presented before a grand jury tomorrow, where we were highly confident that a thorough review of all collected evidence would result in a dismissal of charges.’

‘From the outset, this so-called investigation resembled an excessive, targeted action – verging on a witch hunt – influenced by Kyren’s identity and public recognition.’
‘The investigating agency’s decision to press charges at all was, in our opinion, not only unwarranted but also concerning. It is crucial to note that the Lafourche Parish District Attorney has, to this day, not formally charged Kyren.’
‘[…] There was never an assumption of innocence, highlighted by the NFL’s decision to withdraw consideration of his draft prospects based on mere accusations, without affording him any opportunity to defend himself. The ensuing pressure and scrutiny likely became overwhelming.’
‘Let us be unequivocally clear: This matter is far from concluded. We will demand a complete and transparent investigation into the conduct of this investigation and its rationale. Those accountable for this significant miscarriage of justice must and will be held responsible.’
NFL Aspirations
Just 18 days prior – on March 26 – Lacy participated in LSU’s pro day, showcasing his athletic abilities before NFL scouts.
During the previous season, he played in 12 games for LSU, ranking second on the team with 58 receptions and 866 receiving yards.
Tributes and Condolences
Following Lacy’s death, tributes poured in from figures such as Dak Prescott and Jayden Daniels. LSU also released a statement expressing their grief.
‘We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Kyren Lacy, a former LSU football student-athlete,’ LSU stated. ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, along with his former teammates and coaches impacted by his passing.’
