Electronics Previously Exempt from Tariffs May Face New Duties
Consumer electronics, including smartphones and laptops, initially excluded from the Trump administration’s recent tariffs, could soon be subjected to new levies. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated in an interview on ABC News’ This Week that these devices might be incorporated into a forthcoming round of duties targeting semiconductors within the next couple of months.
Temporary Reprieve for Consumer Goods
Updated directives recently issued by the Trump administration provided a temporary reprieve for smartphones, laptops, and similar products. These items were initially exempted from the latest tariff measures, which included a significant 125 percent additional duty on goods manufactured in China, implemented last week.
Tariffs on Semiconductors to Encompass Electronics
Lutnick clarified that this exemption is not permanent. Speaking to Jonathan Karl, he stated that these electronics will eventually be subject to “a special focus type of tariff” designed for the semiconductor sector. He likened this approach to the automotive tariffs previously imposed by the Trump administration.
Expanding Tariff Scope to Include iPhones and Similar Products
When questioned specifically about whether the new tariffs would encompass products such as iPhones, many of which are assembled in China, Lutnick confirmed this to be “correct.” He articulated that the underlying objective is to “encourage them to reshore, to be built in America,” implying a push for manufacturers to relocate production to the United States.
Concerns Over Price Increases and Manufacturing Feasibility
Karl pointed out the practical challenges of rapidly establishing domestic manufacturing capabilities for complex products like iPhones. “It’s not like you can open a factory tomorrow to build iPhones,” he remarked, further questioning whether these impending tariffs would lead to increased prices for consumers in the U.S. market.
