Melinda Gates Addresses Bill Gates’ “Regret” Over Divorce

Melinda Gates has responded to Bill Gates‘ recent remarks characterizing their divorce as his “biggest mistake.” In a new interview, Melinda Gates addressed her former husband’s statement, emphasizing the necessity of their separation for her personal values.

Melinda Gates on “Necessary” Divorce from Bill Gates

Speaking with The Sunday Times, Melinda, 60, addressed Bill’s prior interview where he labeled their split as his “most regretted” mistake. “It was something that was necessary,” Melinda stated in the profile published Sunday, April 13. She further explained, “If you can’t embody your values within your most intimate partnership, then it was essential.”

Earlier in the year, Bill, 69, told the British publication that his 2021 divorce was “at the top of the list” of his major failures as an adult.

Response to Bill Gates’ Statement

“I don’t quite understand that declaration, so I won’t comment directly on what he expresses,” Melinda responded regarding Bill’s reflection. “He is living his own life, and I am presently living mine. I am very content.”

Former Marriage and Separation

Bill and Melinda were married for 27 years, from 1994 until their separation in 2021. The former couple, who have three adult children, officially concluded their divorce in August 2021.

Reflecting on Life and Lessons

“I’ve reached a juncture at 60 where I’ve experienced considerable life events,” Melinda shared with The Times, referring to her decision to end their marriage. “I recall my mother mentioning after turning 60, ‘I find myself speaking my mind more directly. Even at the dry cleaners, offering suggestions for improved efficiency!'”

She added, “I somewhat identify with that sentiment. I’ve lived a substantial life now. Life imparts numerous lessons, some challenging, yet also beautiful.”

Divorce Settlement and Personal Challenges

Melinda described the divorce settlement process as particularly “difficult,” admitting to The Times that she experienced a panic attack during that period.

Seeking Therapy and Moving Forward

“Ending a marriage is profoundly challenging. The negotiations were arduous,” Melinda acknowledged, mentioning her decision to seek therapy afterward. “It’s important to recognize my privilege. The very access to a therapist is a privilege. Accessing mental health support is difficult for many.”

She continued, “However, universal human experiences connect us all. The emotions, the sadness, the resentment, the pain – these are universal feelings.”

New Relationships and Dating

Both Bill and Melinda have moved forward since their divorce. Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, has been in a relationship with Paula Hurd starting in 2022. Melinda is currently exploring the dating landscape.

Melinda Gates on Dating After Divorce

“Numerous friends have introduced me to people, which has been quite pleasant,” Melinda remarked about her recent dates. She added that she seeks a partner who is not intimidated by her wealth and social stature. “I imagine some individuals might be, while others are not. However, I am not actively seeking someone who would feel daunted by my position. That perspective rather eliminates certain individuals, doesn’t it?”
