Ambitious Undersea Motorway Tunnel Project Launched in China

China has commenced construction on what is anticipated to become the world’s longest underwater motorway tunnel, situated beneath the expansive Yangtze River. This significant infrastructure undertaking will employ a domestically engineered, colossal tunnel boring machine (TBM), christened Jianghai, according to reports from Xinhua News Agency. The extensive subaquatic passage will form a vital transportation artery across the river, connecting the municipalities of Haimen in Nantong and Taicang in Suzhou, spanning approximately 24.3 miles, including a 6.96-mile submerged segment beneath the Yangtze River. This tunnel is poised to significantly improve regional connectivity and boost economic growth in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Advanced Tunnel Boring Technology Deployed

The Jianghai TBM, a formidable piece of machinery boasting a 16.6-meter diameter and weighing a substantial 5,000 tonnes, will be instrumental in excavating the Haitai Yangtze River Tunnel. This projected motorway is designed with six traffic lanes, accommodating travel in both directions, and will enforce a speed restriction of 62 mph.

Projected Completion and Connectivity Enhancements

With an estimated completion date set for 2028, the ambitious project is geared towards substantially improving transportation links between Nantong and Taicang by establishing a major vehicular route traversing the Yangtze River. The tunnel is expected to markedly reduce commuting duration between the aforementioned cities.

Strategic Location and Regional Significance

Situated in Jiangsu Province, Haimen, located in the northeastern sector, is an emerging industrial hub with increasing prominence in manufacturing and transport sectors. Taicang, positioned further south and in close proximity to Shanghai, is recognized for its well-established port facilities, rendering it a crucial center for global trade and commerce.

Reduced Travel Times to Major Cities

Information released by the Information Office of Nantong Municipal People’s Government indicates that the tunnel will curtail travel time between Haimen and downtown Shanghai to a mere half-hour. Furthermore, reaching other major urban centers in southern Jiangsu from Haimen will take only 40 minutes.

Project’s Broader Impact on Regional Development

You Shaoqiang, chief engineer of the tunnel project at China Railway 14th Bureau, emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative, stating, “This project will assume a pivotal role in propelling regional integration throughout the Yangtze River Delta and inject considerable momentum into the high-caliber development of the world-class Yangtze River Delta city cluster.”

Navigating Construction Challenges

However, You Shaoqiang acknowledged the ‘extremely challenging’ nature of the construction endeavor, largely attributed to the necessity of navigating intricate geological formations beneath the riverbed while contending with immense hydrostatic pressure, potentially reaching 75 tonnes per square meter.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Precision Engineering

The TBM is reportedly outfitted with state-of-the-art technology, encompassing a pressure-balanced cutterhead to effectively manage the high-pressure environment and an intelligent monitoring system for real-time operational tracking and oversight.

Emphasis on Innovation and Sustainability

Chen Junwei, manager of the tunnel project, highlighted the tunnel’s pioneering attributes, spanning structural design, disaster mitigation, equipment, eco-friendly technology, and intelligent systems. He affirmed that the construction process is designed to approach carbon neutrality, underscoring its commitment to sustainable practices.

Enhanced Operational Efficiency and Safety Protocols

The TBM incorporates a dual slurry injection mechanism to amplify operational efficiency and features a smoke extraction system to prioritize safety. Furthermore, an access tunnel designated for emergency vehicles ensures swift response capabilities without causing disruptions to ongoing tunnel construction activities.
