Nigerian Military Operation Neutralizes Bandit Kingpin and Suspected Operatives in the North-West
North-West Nigeria has been the scene of a successful joint military operation resulting in the death of an infamous bandit kingpin and approximately 100 of his suspected operatives, according to official sources. Gwaska Dankarami, identified as a high-priority target, was reportedly the second-in-command to a leader with links to the Islamic State group.
Key Bandit Leader Eliminated
The alleged gang leader was reportedly hiding within Munumu Forest. Authorities stated that multiple criminal hideouts across the state were also dismantled during the operation on Friday.
Operation Follows Deadly Bandit Attacks
This development follows a recent surge in bandit activity, including the kidnapping of 43 villagers and the deaths of four others in a violent assault on Maigora village in Katsina State earlier in the week. Law enforcement officials had reported the deployment of security forces to pursue those responsible for the kidnappings.
Conflicting Reports and Confirmation
It is noteworthy that reports of Dankarami’s demise have surfaced previously. In 2022, the Nigerian Air Force issued a claim of having killed him in a similar operation. However, this latest announcement is being treated with more certainty by state officials.
Government Statement on Successful Operation
Nasir Mua’zu, the Katsina State commissioner for internal security and home affairs, hailed the operation as a significant victory in the ongoing fight against banditry in the region.
“This successful mission marks a crucial disruption of the criminal networks that have long terrorized communities across Faskari, Kankara, Bakori, Malumfashi, and Kafur,” Commissioner Mua’zu stated.
Weapons Recovered in Security Operation
Security personnel reported the recovery and destruction of substantial weaponry, including two machine guns and several locally manufactured shotguns, during the operation targeting the bandit kingpin and his network.
Separate Operation Targets Bandit Commanders
In a separate intelligence-led operation conducted on Thursday, security forces neutralized six bandits, among them a commander, while several others escaped with gunshot injuries. Authorities also intercepted and recovered seven motorcycles during this operation.
Background of Banditry in Katsina State
Katsina State, the home state of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has experienced persistent attacks by bandits and kidnappers, resulting in numerous casualties and widespread disruption across communities.
Government Commitment to Security
Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, the current state governor, has reiterated the government’s resolve to eradicate criminal elements and enhance surveillance across forested areas to ensure the safety and security of all residents.
Broader Strategy to Restore Stability
Authorities emphasized that these operations are integral to a larger strategy aimed at restoring stability within Katsina State and the wider north-west Nigeria region, which has been severely impacted by repeated incidents of banditry and related criminal activities.
