Money Saving Expert’s Martin Lewis Conducts Mini Egg Taste Test: Cadbury Challenged

Mini Eggs are a quintessential Easter chocolate treat, and Cadbury’s iconic version is often considered the benchmark. However, with the price of Cadbury Mini Eggs increasing, consumers are exploring alternative options for their seasonal confectionery fix. Consumer champion Martin Lewis and the Money Saving Expert (MSE) team undertook a comprehensive taste test, comparing various Mini Egg brands against the established Cadbury offering.

The Mini Egg Challengers: A Price and Taste Comparison

The Money Saving Expert team evaluated a selection of Mini Eggs available from different retailers, analyzing both taste and value. The lineup included:

  • Poundland’s Easter Little Speckled Eggs: 70g for £1
  • Aldi’s Dairyfine Mini Chocolate Eggs: 80g for £1.25
  • Lidl’s Mister Choc Mini Eggs: 80g for £1.25
  • Sainsbury’s Speckled Mini Eggs: 80g for £1.50
  • Cadbury Mini Eggs: 80g for £1.85
  • Mummy Meegz Milk Chocolate Chickee Eggs (Vegan): 80g for £2.75
  • M&S Chocolate Speckled Eggs: 150g for £3

Martin Lewis Shares Initial Mini Egg Taste Test Insights on Instagram

Martin Lewis, renowned for his financial guidance, documented the Mini Egg taste test on Instagram. He posted a photo featuring a scorecard amidst bowls of various Mini Eggs, captioning it: “Mini Egg comparison test currently underway in MSE Towers (7 different brands).”

He further revealed his personal experience, stating: “I managed to correctly identify the Cadbury ones but they were only my 2nd favourite. Collective results of the full taste test coming on MSE soon (it’s a hard job).”

Money Saving Expert Reveals Verdict: Cadbury Still Reigns Supreme in Taste, Poundland Wins on Value

The comprehensive results from the MoneySavingExpert.com forum are now available. Martin Lewis, alongside 28 taste testers, delivered their verdicts on the best Mini Eggs. While Cadbury was voted the top choice for both taste and appearance in a competitive field, Poundland emerged victorious in the best value category, priced at £1.43 per 100g – significantly cheaper than Cadbury.

Taste and Appearance Standouts

In terms of flavour, Cadbury, M&S, and Poundland were highly rated. For visual appeal, Cadbury, Lidl, and Aldi received the highest praise. Despite the collective findings, Martin Lewis did not disclose his personal top pick.

Poundland’s Value Proposition and Palm Oil Concerns

Budget-conscious shoppers may find Poundland’s Mini Eggs particularly appealing, costing 38% less per 100g than Cadbury’s. However, the MSE investigation pointed out that Cadbury Mini Eggs were the only brand among the seven tested to contain palm oil.

Social Media Reacts to Mini Egg Taste Test: Palm Oil Issue Sparks Debate

Martin Lewis’s Instagram post about the Mini Eggs taste test garnered significant attention, receiving over 9,000 likes and nearly 300 comments. A prominent comment highlighted the palm oil concern with Cadbury, stating: “Points deducted for palm oil and additives please!” This comment resonated with the Instagram community, gaining 106 likes.

Vegan Options and Consumer Enthusiasm

Another user humorously acknowledged the “tough job” of taste testing. Meanwhile, a delighted vegan consumer expressed joy at discovering Mummy Meegz vegan chickee eggs, stating it was a “revelation” after years of being unable to eat traditional Mini Eggs due to dairy intolerance.
