Air fryers have surged in popularity as a favored kitchen appliance in recent years, eclipsing previous cooking trends and emerging as a top choice for individuals seeking efficient meal preparation. These appliances are often quicker and more economical to operate than conventional ovens. Furthermore, air fryers offer the advantage of cooking food with reduced oil, frequently promoting a healthier approach to cooking. However, despite their usefulness and adaptability, certain foods are not suitable for air frying and can lead to unsatisfactory outcomes or even pose safety risks, according to culinary experts.
Foods To Avoid in Your Air Fryer
While some foods might merely yield subpar results when cooked in an air fryer, others can present legitimate dangers. It is crucial to be aware of foods that are incompatible with this appliance to ensure both cooking success and safety.
Popcorn: A Potential Fire Hazard
Experts at BBC Good Food caution against preparing popcorn in an air fryer due to the potential for fire. Popcorn kernels are unlikely to pop effectively in these appliances because the temperature may not be consistently high enough to initiate popping. More concerningly, unpopped kernels can become trapped within the heating element of the air fryer, thereby increasing the risk of fire.
Grace Forell, a consumer journalist from Which?, advised against this practice in a statement to the BBC: “Popcorn is not recommended for air fryers, as most models do not reach the necessary temperature to pop the kernels adequately. Moreover, the kernels can lodge in the heating element, potentially causing a short circuit and a subsequent fire. For popcorn preparation, microwaving or stovetop methods are more suitable, especially for movie nights.”
Wet Batter: A Recipe for Uneven Cooking
Wet batter, commonly used for items like fried chicken, is another food that is ill-suited for air fryers. The air fryer may not provide sufficient heat to properly set wet batter. Consequently, the batter can remain soggy and drip throughout the appliance instead of achieving a crisp texture. Accumulations of uncooked batter can also scorch onto the base of the basket, potentially damaging the air fryer.
Toast: An Inefficient Method
Preparing toast in an air fryer, while not hazardous to the appliance itself, is unlikely to produce satisfactory results. Helena Busiakiewicz, cookery assistant at Good Food, advises against using an air fryer for toast, explaining, “Bread placed in an air fryer tends to move around and not cook evenly. A conventional toaster remains the optimal appliance for making toast.”
Excessive Oil: Be Mindful of Fire Risk
While using a small amount of oil in an air fryer is generally acceptable, insurance firm Aviva warns against excessive oil usage due to the increased risk of fire. Air fryers are not designed to handle large quantities of oil. Aviva’s research indicated that 8% of fires they investigated were attributable to overusing oil in air fryers. Therefore, prudent oil management is crucial for safe air fryer operation.
