Veterinarian Reveals Cat Breeds He Would Never Own

Considering pet ownership? A veterinarian has identified five popular cat breeds he would personally avoid due to potential health issues and breed-specific problems. Choosing a feline companion is a rewarding experience, offering affection and reducing stress. However, prospective owners must understand that bringing a cat into your home is a significant commitment that necessitates careful consideration and research.

Cats are beloved pets in the UK, with a substantial portion of the adult population—around 24%—owning approximately 10.8 million domestic cats. Their independent nature, calming presence, and often amusing personalities contribute to their appeal as household companions.

Dr. Amir Anwary, a respected veterinarian with a considerable following on TikTok, routinely shares his expert opinions and advice on animal well-being. In a recent video, he disclosed the five cat breeds he, as a vet, would “never own”.

Dr. Anwary playfully captioned the video with: “The last one I would definitely not own,” accompanied by laughing emojis, adding a touch of humour to his expert advice.

Top 5 Cat Breeds to Reconsider

5. Munchkin

The Munchkin cat, officially recognized in 1991, is distinctive for its notably short legs, a trait resulting from a genetic anomaly. This breed is widely considered to be the original dwarf cat breed.

Despite their affectionate and sociable nature, the veterinarian has issued a cautionary note regarding the potential discomfort and health problems that can affect these seemingly adorable pets due to their unique physical characteristics.

Dr. Anwary clarified, “Their short legs are a consequence of a genetic mutation that can predispose them to spinal and joint conditions, such as lordosis or arthritis.”

4. Birman

The Birman, esteemed as the ‘Sacred Cat of Burma’, is recognized for its striking long-haired coat and characteristic colour-pointed markings. This breed also features on the veterinarian‘s list, not due to their captivating deep blue eyes and desirable white “gloves” on each paw, but for other concerning reasons.

According to Dr. Anwary, this breed is “susceptible to inherited diseases like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), and certain lineages exhibit immune system vulnerabilities.”

3. Scottish Fold

The Scottish Fold’s gentle disposition has endeared it to many pet lovers; however, these cats carry significant health risks. A dominant genetic mutation gives rise to osteochondrodysplasia, a disorder impacting bone and cartilage development, which can lead to extensive health complications and pain.

Dr. Anwary cautioned, “The distinct folded ears are a result of a cartilage defect that unfortunately also affects joints, frequently causing painful osteochondrodysplasia.”

2. Persian

The vet advises against choosing Persian cats, again citing potential health issues. He explained, “Their flattened faces (brachycephaly) can result in chronic respiratory difficulties, dental problems, and tear duct overflow. Furthermore, they are prone to polycystic kidney disease (PKD).”

While celebrated for their luxurious long fur, charming round faces, and placid temperament, their characteristically short muzzles unfortunately predispose them to various health problems.

Reports indicate that in some regions, almost half of the Persian cat population suffers from PKD, largely attributed to their compressed facial structure.

1. Tiger

Concluding his list with a more exaggerated, humorous illustration, the veterinarian included tigers.

Wild animals like tigers have, surprisingly, been kept as pets over the years. Famously, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson had a known fondness for Bengal tigers and is thought to have owned three.

Keeping a tiger as a pet is exceedingly dangerous. These undomesticated wild creatures pose potentially lethal threats to anyone attempting to confine them within a domestic environment.
