And the frustrating aspect is the constant change,” remarked Shawn Kitchell, CEO of Regal Products, a supplier of gun-safety equipment to gun manufacturers, the military, and non-profit organizations. “A business or industry can adapt and modify its business model to accommodate tariffs, but the continuous shifts make it exceedingly challenging.” The volatile policy environment creates significant operational difficulties for businesses in the sector.
Shifting Manufacturing Locations
Kitchell acquired Regal in 2022, but the company has been involved in selling gun-safety items for over three decades. Throughout this period, they collaborated with Chinese manufacturers to produce gun locks and soft-shell gun cases. Once Trump’s presidential campaign gained momentum and tariffs became a prominent element of his platform, Kitchell and Regal initiated a move to relocate more of their manufacturing operations to Pakistan and Myanmar, he stated. Geopolitical shifts and trade policies are directly influencing manufacturing decisions.
Impact on Gun Safety Initiatives
Despite these adjustments, Regal has experienced increased costs. Consequently, clients like the NSSF – a purchaser of cable gun locks from Regal for its Project ChildSafe program – may be compelled to reduce their product acquisitions. This reduction translates to fewer gun-safety devices being distributed to families free of charge. The cascading effects of tariffs extend to public safety initiatives.
Long-Term Concerns for Gun Safety and Public Information
Kitchell expressed confidence in Regal’s ability to weather the tariff impact, given its 35-year history. He hopes that Trump’s stated intention of temporary economic discomfort leading to long-term economic benefits will materialize. However, he remains concerned that immediate challenges could disrupt suicide-prevention and gun-safety programs. The increased cost of producing customized educational materials, complimentary locks, and secure cases could surpass Regal’s capacity without necessitating cuts in other operational areas. The balance between business viability and public service is being tested.
Potential Program Reductions
“We may not be able to disseminate as much public information. There are potentially programs focused on this area that we’re trying to launch and promote that might be curtailed,” he added. “We lack viable domestic production alternatives. Ideally, exemptions would be granted for these categories of safety- and mental health-focused products.” The absence of domestic alternatives and the lack of exemptions for safety-related products compound the challenges posed by the tariff regime.
