IRS Tax Return Processing in 2025
The IRS published data on Friday comparing its progress through week 10 of the 2024 tax season (ending April 5, 2024) to the same period in 2025 (ending April 4, 2025). This year, the agency has processed 100.3 million federal income tax returns, a slight 0.2% increase from the 100.1 million processed by this time last year.

The agency further categorized tax returns by filing method, noting that 98.1 million returns were submitted electronically. Of these, 53.3 million were filed by tax professionals, and 44.7 million were self-prepared.

The IRS has disbursed 67.7 million tax refunds, representing a 1.4% rise from the approximate 66.8 million issued by this point in 2024.
The average tax refund amount to date is $3,116, which is a 3.5% increase from last year’s average of $3,011 during the corresponding timeframe.
2025 vs. 2024 Tax Refund Comparison
To date, the IRS has issued over $211 billion in tax refunds, a substantial 5% increase from the $201 billion in refunds issued at the same point in 2024.
The IRS stated that considerable percentage variations in filing statistics are typical at the start of each tax season. The agency anticipates that these figures will stabilize as more individuals gather necessary tax documents and file their returns in the final lead-up to the April 15 deadline.
