Samsung SmartThings Update Aims to Enhance Sleep and Expand Device Compatibility

Samsung has introduced the newest enhancements to its SmartThings smart home platform, designed to assist users in determining if factors such as home temperature are negatively impacting their sleep. This sleep-centric feature is a highlight within a suite of updates for the SmartThings ecosystem, unveiled on Wednesday. The update further expands compatibility and functionality within the smart home space.

Matter 1.4 Support and Expanded Device Integration

A key addition to the updated SmartThings platform is the incorporation of Matter 1.4 protocol support. This enhancement enables seamless integration with a broader range of smart devices, including energy management solutions like solar panels, home batteries, heat pumps, and water heaters, all controllable via the SmartThings system.

According to Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings at Samsung Electronics, “This latest SmartThings update reflects our continuous commitment to building a smart home experience that is increasingly intuitive, interconnected, and tailored to individual user needs.”

Enhanced Sleep Monitoring and Environment Optimization

The core of these updates focuses on enhancing sleep monitoring and management through integration with compatible Samsung Galaxy devices. Currently, this functionality extends to smartphones running One UI 7.0 or higher and Samsung Health version 6.29 or later.

Leveraging data from sensors on connected devices, the SmartThings platform analyzes environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide concentration, and light levels. Based on this analysis, it provides personalized recommendations to optimize the sleep environment. Furthermore, for users with a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, the system can automate adjustments to the home environment based on detected sleep and wake patterns, for example, automatically turning off lights and televisions at bedtime.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

Additional Enhancements

Further updates to the SmartThings platform include:

  • Scheduled Automations: Users can now create automation routines triggered by recurring schedules, enabling features like automated smart light color changes for events such as family birthdays.
  • Voice Message Broadcasting: SmartThings facilitates real-time voice message broadcasting through connected speakers within the home.
