Rare Dissent within Administration Ranks
Her remarks represented a notable instance of dissent within the Trump administration’s ranks.
VP Vance’s Greenland Visit and Controversial Statements
During a visit to Greenland last month, Vice President Vance directed criticism towards Denmark, advocating for the Arctic island’s independence.
This visit coincided with President Donald Trump reiterating his aspiration to acquire the Danish territory for the United States.
Vice President Vance’s trip to Greenland on March 28 was intended to convey a message to Denmark and the international community regarding the Trump administration’s desired political transformations in the territory.
He stated, “We anticipate that Greenlanders will opt for independence from Denmark through self-determination, and subsequently, we will engage in discussions with the people of Denmark.”
He further asserted that the United States was no longer willing to solely bear the financial burden of ensuring the region’s security for Europe.
“Should the people of Greenland be willing to partner with the United States, which I believe they ultimately will, we could significantly enhance their security. We could provide substantially more protection, and I believe they would also experience greater economic prosperity,” he added.
Danish Condemnation of US Interest
Danish leaders have consistently denounced President Trump and the United States for expressing interest in Greenland.
Following Vice President Vance’s visit, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen commented, “We are receptive to criticism, but to be completely frank, we do not appreciate the tone in which it is delivered.”
Greenland’s Position on Independence and US Interest
Greenland’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has also declared that the autonomous territory is not available for purchase and characterized President Trump as “a threat to our political independence.”
Vance’s Criticism of Denmark’s Security Measures
However, Vice President Vance voiced strong disapproval of Denmark’s perceived inadequacies in securing the region.
“This matter needs to be addressed, and regrettably, it is because our counterparts in Denmark have not adequately secured this area,” he stated.
“Denmark has not maintained the necessary commitment in allocating resources to safeguard this base, our troops, and, in my assessment, the people of Greenland,” he added.
During his visit, Vice President Vance was questioned about the President’s aspiration to acquire Greenland.
He responded, “Indeed, the President has expressed the necessity of having Greenland, and I concur that we must adopt a more serious approach to Greenland’s security.”
“We cannot afford to overlook this region, disregard the President’s objectives, or, most importantly, dismiss the previously mentioned Russian and Chinese influence in Greenland.”
“Our message is straightforward,” he continued. “We acknowledge the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination, and we hope they choose to collaborate with the United States, as we are the sole nation on earth that will genuinely respect their sovereignty and security.”
