Darts Star Littler Baffled by Crowd Boos in Germany

Emerging darts sensation Luke Littler has expressed bewilderment at receiving negative crowd reactions during overseas events. Speaking to Oche180, the 18-year-old acknowledged experiencing a “headloss moment” due to the unexpected jeers. “I just don’t understand it, and I can’t explain it,” Littler stated. “You complete your walk-on, but as soon as I reached the stage, the booing commenced.”

Pattern of Negative Reactions

Littler suggested he has observed a recurring pattern of unfavourable crowd responses when competing internationally. He further recognised that enduring challenging crowd atmospheres is part of professional darts, particularly for English players performing in nations like Germany.

Hildesheim Incident Recalled

Recounting a prior experience, Littler noted, “I was booed in Hildesheim last year during a European Tour match against Peter Wright. I felt in excellent form, but when the booing started, I suffered a setback and ultimately lost the match. Even after taking an initial 1-0 lead, the negative reaction persisted. Wright then progressed to a 5-1 advantage, marking one of those difficult junctures.”

Dealing with Hostile Crowds

“It’s something we all have to contend with,” Littler commented regarding crowd behaviour. “For myself and Luke Humphries, we experience it quite frequently. It seems some sections of the German crowds hold a disfavour towards English players.”

Aspinall Echoes Crowd Concerns

Littler’s experience is not isolated, as fellow darts professional Nathan Aspinall also voiced concerns about spectator conduct earlier this month. Following his match at the International Darts Open in Riesa, Aspinall openly criticised sections of the crowd, expressing his incomprehension of their adverse behaviour.

Contrasting UK Receptions

Notably, Aspinall, the reigning world champion, has also faced jeers at venues within the UK, predominantly in Liverpool. However, his response to the Liverpool crowd was light-hearted. In many instances within the UK, crowd noise directed at Aspinall is often perceived as good-natured banter, often linked to his support for Manchester United, a rival football club.
