Pop Star Katy Perry Set to Potentially Embark on Spaceflight Aboard Blue Origin Mission
Chart-topping pop sensation Katy Perry is reportedly preparing for a celestial journey, potentially needing to revise the lyrics of her popular anthem “Firework” to reflect a more cosmic theme. The acclaimed musician is slated to become one of the latest prominent figures to venture into space on Monday, joining Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission. Noted author and former journalist Lauren Sanchez, the fiancée of Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, will also be among the crew members.
All-Female Crew Composition
The groundbreaking, all-female team will also feature NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyễn, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and CBS broadcast personality Gayle King. King is well-known as a close confidante of Oprah Winfrey.
This mission represents a significant milestone, marking the first all-female space expedition since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s pioneering solo voyage in 1963. Tereshkova holds the distinction of being the first woman to travel to space.

The precise definition of “space” remains a topic of ongoing discussion. While the International Space Station is universally recognized as orbiting in space, the designation of commercial suborbital flights, such as those conducted by Blue Origin, is sometimes debated. A commonly used metric is the Karman line, demarcated at an altitude of 62 miles (100 kilometers) above Earth’s surface, which is often considered the threshold of space.
According to NASA, while “no definitive boundary exists between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space,” the Karman line is widely accepted within the scientific community as the point of transition. Therefore, barring semantic disagreements, Perry and her fellow crew members are expected to briefly enter space during their mission.
The passengers will experience a period of weightlessness as the spacecraft ascends beyond the Karman line. The descent phase will involve a parachute-assisted landing, ensuring a controlled return to Earth.
New Shepard Program Achievements
This upcoming flight will mark the 11th human spaceflight for Blue Origin’s New Shepard program. To date, Blue Origin has successfully transported 52 individuals to space, including notable personalities such as Star Trek actor William Shatner, Good Morning America host Michael Strahan, and Jeff Bezos himself.
