Sloclap’s “Rematch” Shifts Focus from Martial Arts to Competitive Sports Gaming

Known for their martial arts expertise in titles like “Sifu,” developer Sloclap is venturing into the realm of sports games with their upcoming release, “Rematch.” This 5v5 competitive football (soccer) game, slated for launch this summer, surprisingly shares more DNA with “Rocket League” than traditional simulations like “FIFA.” Early impressions suggest “Rematch” offers a “unique experience,” according to previews after a hands-on session at Sloclap’s studio.

Price Point and the Free-to-Play Debate

The game’s price tag of $30 may raise eyebrows for some, given the prevalence of free-to-play models in today’s multiplayer gaming landscape. The debate around free-to-play versus premium pricing is common, particularly when discussing competitive online games. Some argue that a free-to-play model is essential for success, a sentiment often echoed when a multiplayer title underperforms.

However, Rematch creative director Pierre Tarno, in discussions with PC Gamer during a studio visit, asserted that online games don’t necessarily need to be free-to-play. He stated that the free-to-play approach was never a consideration for Sloclap.

Focus on Game Quality Over Free-to-Play Model

“Free-to-play was never something I considered,” Tarno explained. “In game development, there’s no magic formula for commercial success. The most effective approach, perhaps the only true path, is to create an exceptional game.”

He pointed to the success of “Helldivers 2,” which launched at $30 and rapidly became PlayStation’s fastest-selling title, as evidence of this philosophy.

Respecting Players and Delivering Quality Experiences

“Respect for our players – their intellect and abilities – is a core principle at Sloclap,” Tarno elaborated. “We favor challenging gameplay, and gamers are a highly discerning audience. They possess sharp analytical skills, meticulously evaluating game mechanics, discerning what functions effectively, what needs refinement, and assessing balance.”

Tarno concluded, “My point is, if you develop a genuinely good and distinct game—even amidst player assumptions that online competitive games must be free-to-play to thrive—I believe that’s inaccurate. If the game offers originality, solid gameplay, and a reasonable price, players will be inclined to purchase it.”

Anticipation for Rematch Release

“Rematch” is set to release on June 19th (Steam page available). If it lives up to the standards set by Sloclap’s previous acclaimed titles, “Absolver” and “Sifu,” it is hoped players will embrace it. Initial previews express optimism—further details can be found in hands-on reports.
