Surge in Used Tesla Listings Coincides with Consumer Reactions to Musk’s Public Stance
An increasing number of Tesla owners are listing their pre-owned vehicles for sale, a trend appearing to correlate with consumer responses to Elon Musk’s political commentary and the ensuing global demonstrations.
Significant Rise in Used Tesla Inventory
Data from Cox Automotive, parent company of Autotrader, reported by Sherwood News, indicates a notable surge in used Tesla vehicles advertised for sale on Autotrader.com during March. Particularly in the final week of March, listings averaged over 13,000 used Teslas. This figure represents a record high, demonstrating a substantial 67% increase compared to the corresponding week in the previous year.
Slowdown in New Tesla Sales Contrasts with Overall EV Market Growth
Concurrently, sales of new Tesla vehicles have experienced a deceleration, even amidst an expanding market for electric vehicles from other manufacturers. According to the latest Kelley Blue Book report, nearly 300,000 new EVs were purchased in the United States during the first quarter of 2025, marking a 10.6% increase year-over-year. In contrast, Tesla’s sales volume for the same period witnessed a decline of nearly 9% compared to the first quarter of 2024.
Competitors Experience EV Sales Growth
While traditional automakers such as GM and Hyundai are still positioned behind Tesla in overall EV market share, these companies are observing accelerated growth in their electric vehicle sales. For example, GM brands recorded sales exceeding 30,000 EVs in the first quarter, almost doubling their sales volume from the prior year, as reported by Kelley Blue Book.
