NASA Astronaut Chris Williams Assigned to First Space Station Mission. One of NASA’s newest astronauts, Christopher Williams, has been selected for his inaugural mission to the International Space Station (ISS). He will participate in Expedition 74 after launching aboard the Russian Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft.

New NASA Astronaut Selected for ISS Expedition

Christopher Williams, a member of NASA’s 2021 astronaut class, is set to embark on his first spaceflight. He will join the crew of the International Space Station (ISS) as a flight engineer for Expedition 74.

Soyuz MS-28 Launch Details

Williams’ journey to space will commence with the launch of the Russian Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft, scheduled to lift off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The launch is currently targeted for no earlier than November 2025. He will be accompanied by Russian cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev from Roscosmos.

Williams’ Mission Duration and Role

Astronaut Williams is slated to spend approximately eight months aboard the ISS. During his extended stay at the orbiting research facility, he will serve as a flight engineer, contributing to the station’s operations and scientific objectives.

Classmate Missions and Background

Williams is the second astronaut from his graduating class to be assigned to an ISS mission. Nichole Ayers preceded him, having launched aboard SpaceX’s Crew-10 mission in March. Furthermore, Andre Douglas from the same class is part of the backup crew for NASA’s Artemis 2 mission, and Anil Menon is currently in training for the Soyuz MS-29 mission.

Prior to his astronaut selection, he completed a Medical Physics Residency at Harvard Medical School and was engaged in research as a clinical physicist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

ISS Crew Rotation and Mission Timeline

The Soyuz MS-28 crew will replace the Soyuz MS-27 astronauts, who are nearing the end of their mission. Soyuz MS-27, carrying NASA’s Jonny Kim and two cosmonauts, launched on April 8. The MS-27 crew is anticipated to return to Earth in early December, after the arrival of Soyuz MS-28 at the International Space Station.

Ongoing Research on the ISS

During his time in space, Williams, along with the rest of the ISS crew, will continue to conduct numerous microgravity experiments. These investigations encompass studying the effects of spaceflight on the human body, performing various technology demonstrations, and maintaining the space station’s essential systems.
