“The surrogate is still in our life,” Munn stated, when asked about sharing Méi’s birth story with her. She further commented on the surrogate’s exceptional nature, saying, “She was a better pregnant woman than I could have ever been.”
Munn described the surrogate as “an incredible mother, an incredible human being, an incredible friend, just wonderful,” emphasizing the deep appreciation and respect she holds for her.

“I needed her to understand that I needed to go this route,” Munn explained. “It wasn’t for superficial reasons or because I wanted to put my work first.”
She further clarified, “I needed her to understand this would be hard for me,” indicating the emotional complexities of entrusting this intimate experience to another person.

Munn shared that the surrogate’s motivation was genuinely altruistic. “She wanted to be a surrogate because she wanted to help mothers who were struggling to carry their own children,” Munn recounted from a Self magazine Instagram video.
Overcoming Initial Sadness and Embracing Gratitude
Reflecting on her emotional journey, Munn admitted experiencing initial sadness about not carrying her daughter herself. However, this feeling diminished as she placed her trust in the surrogate.
“I think the most surprising part of the surrogacy journey was the sadness I felt from not being able to carry my daughter really dissipated once all of my hopes and dreams were placed into this other woman and I knew that she was really kind and cared so much I just sat in my gratitude instead of living in any fear, or sadness, or concern.” Munn explained.
Advice for Considering Surrogacy
Offering guidance to others considering surrogacy, Munn shared her positive perspective.
“I think what you’re going to find is that it’s so incredibly beautiful,” Munn advised. “You know, when you meet people who want to do this, you realize there’s so much good in the world, and you’ll feel that.”
She acknowledged the initial feelings of sadness and loss of control, but emphasized the overwhelming love, gratitude, and hope that ultimately emerge from the surrogacy experience.
“At first there’s the sadness, and the concern, and you’re losing control, but it is soon replaced by so much love and and so much gratitude and so much hope in the world.”

Munn and Mulaney were present in the delivery room when Méi was born, alongside the surrogate’s husband, highlighting the inclusive and supportive nature of their surrogacy arrangement.
“The first person John hugged was the husband, he gave him a big kiss on the cheek…It was just wonderful,” Munn shared, emphasizing the shared joy and appreciation experienced by both families during this momentous occasion.
