TV Personality Gloria Hunniford Recounts Emergency Hospitalization Amid Health Scare
Veteran television personality Gloria Hunniford, known for her roles on shows like “Rip Off Britain” and “Loose Women,” has revealed details of a recent health scare that necessitated an emergency hospital visit. The seasoned presenter was diagnosed with kidney stones, which led to a series of medical procedures and a subsequent unexpected health crisis following surgery.
Unexpected Post-Surgery Complications
Hunniford described undergoing an initial operation to address the kidney stones, followed by a second procedure three weeks later to remove a stent inserted during the first intervention. However, shortly after receiving general anaesthesia for the stent removal, the situation took a concerning turn.
Alarming Drop in Blood Pressure
“The last thing they said before I went to theatre was: ‘When I take this stent out you are going to feel so much better’,” Hunniford recounted. However, upon regaining consciousness after the anaesthesia, a nurse informed her of a serious issue. “But the next thing I knew coming out of the anaesthetic, was a nurse saying to me, ‘Don’t worry, don’t panic but we are having to transfer you by ambulance to a different hospital because we can’t get your blood pressure up’.”
Transfer and Diagnosis of Sepsis
The 82-year-old presenter’s next recollection was waking up to the realization that she needed to be transferred due to dangerously low blood pressure. She was moved from a Maidstone hospital to a nearby Accident & Emergency department. Hunniford described the profound fatigue she experienced during this ordeal: “It was like somebody had put a tap in my body and just drained all the energy.” Medical professionals subsequently diagnosed kidney sepsis as the cause of her severe symptoms. Fortunately, the infection was contained within her kidney.
Road to Recovery and Resilience
Reflecting on the serious incident, Hunniford stated, “I guess that’s why I felt so awful and it did flatten me for a while.” Following her release from hospital, Hunniford focused on recuperation, spending considerable time resting and sleeping as she battled exhaustion and a reduced appetite. She shared that medical experts indicated it could take up to six months to fully recover from the effects of two general anaesthetics administered in close proximity.

Support System and Return to Public Life
Despite this significant health scare, Gloria Hunniford made a rapid return to public engagements. She attributed her swift recovery to setting achievable short-term goals and the unwavering support of her late husband Stephen and her family. “I set myself little tasks and my [husband] Stephen was marvellous. He was chief cook and bottle-washer and my whole wonderful family rallied round,” she gratefully acknowledged.
Approaching Full Strength
Now, Hunniford reports being nearly back to full health, estimating that she has regained approximately “98%” of her energy. This hospital ordeal has reinforced her determination to confront life’s challenges with resilience. “We all know that stuff will be thrown at you and it’s how you deal with things,” she affirmed.
