General strike hits transport in Argentina

Nationwide Strike Cripples Argentina’s Transport Network Amid Spending Cuts

A nationwide general strike in Argentina, protesting government austerity measures and public spending cuts, has caused widespread transport chaos across the country. Domestic air travel is grounded due to complete flight cancellations, and train and subway systems are halted in Buenos Aires and other major urban centers. While numerous businesses in the capital have shuttered, bus services are reportedly still operational. Airlines have indicated that international flights are expected to operate with minimal disturbances.

Unions Protest Milei’s Austerity Policies

This marks the third nationwide work stoppage organized by Argentina’s influential labor unions since President Javier Milei assumed office in late 2023. President Milei’s administration has implemented stringent austerity policies aimed at combating rampant hyperinflation. While these measures have shown some success in curbing inflation from over 200% to approximately 60% annually, unions argue that the most vulnerable segments of society, including pensioners and low-wage earners, are disproportionately bearing the brunt of these economic adjustments.

Public Impact and Social Concerns

President Milei’s austerity drive includes significant cuts to subsidies for transport, fuel, and energy, alongside the dismissal of tens of thousands of public sector employees and the closure of government ministries.

Horacio Bianchi, a retired teacher residing in Buenos Aires, voiced concerns, stating that citizens are enduring hardship, struggling with basic needs such as food. He criticized the government, asserting that the current administration’s policies have exacerbated economic difficulties for the populace.

Pensioner Protests and Social Unrest

Prior to the general strike, workers joined a weekly demonstration led by pensioners protesting reductions to their pension funds. Recent pensioner protests have witnessed escalating tensions. Clashes between law enforcement and supportive groups have occurred, occasionally resulting in violent confrontations.

IMF Loan Negotiations and International Support

This labor action takes place as the Argentine government awaits a decision on a potential $20 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Argentina is already indebted to the IMF and owes $44 billion.

The US Treasury has commended President Milei and his efforts to address Argentina’s economic challenges. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to visit Buenos Aires to express support for the ongoing economic reforms.
