Raducanu’s Withdrawal Disappoints Keothavong Ahead of Billie Jean King Cup
British tennis captain Anne Keothavong has expressed her disappointment following Emma Raducanu’s decision to withdraw from the Great Britain team for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup matches. Raducanu, a prominent figure in British tennis, was slated to represent her nation against Germany and the Netherlands this weekend but has instead chosen to prioritize a dedicated training period. This withdrawal comes after her quarter-final appearance at the Miami Open, where she was defeated by Jessica Pegula.
Raducanu Prioritizes Training Block
Last week, it was officially announced that Raducanu had opted out of the Great Britain squad to concentrate on her training regime in preparation for the approaching clay-court season. Raducanu’s representatives described it as a ‘difficult decision’, stating that she ‘needs some space in the calendar to best manage her physical condition’. Jodie Burrage has since been named as Raducanu’s replacement in the British team for the Billie Jean King Cup.
Keothavong Acknowledges Raducanu’s Perspective
Team captain Keothavong conveyed that while she is ‘naturally disappointed’ by Raducanu’s absence from the Billie Jean King Cup, she appreciates the 22-year-old’s choice to prioritize her individual development and preparation.
“Naturally disappointed, but I understand her position,” Keothavong told The Guardian regarding Raducanu’s withdrawal.
“She contributed significantly to this team last year and was instrumental in our success. We have five highly motivated players here, eager to compete and well-prepared. I sincerely hope Emma will rejoin us in the future.”

Strength in Depth for British Women’s Tennis
Keothavong further emphasized the advancement of women’s tennis in the UK, highlighting the emergence of several gifted players, providing her with a strong selection pool for team events like the Billie Jean King Cup.
“I feel privileged to have such strength and depth available,” Keothavong added. “British women’s tennis has progressed considerably.”
“The positive aspect of this depth does present selection challenges, but it’s preferable to have a range of players to select from and depend on.”
New Billie Jean King Cup Qualifying Format
Great Britain is participating in a revised qualifying format for the Billie Jean King Cup, featuring six groups of three nations competing in round-robin matches over three days. The top nation from each group will advance to the finals in China, scheduled for September.
Swiatek Also Withdraws
Raducanu is not the only high-profile player absent from this weekend’s Billie Jean King Cup fixtures. Iga Swiatek has also withdrawn from Poland’s qualifying ties against Switzerland and Ukraine, citing a need to ‘focus on myself and my training’.
