Sainz Potentially Faces Further Sanction Following Expletive at Bahrain Grand Prix Press Conference
Formula One driver Carlos Sainz is potentially facing another fine, estimated at up to £34,000 (€40,000), after using an expletive during a press conference at the Bahrain Grand Prix. This latest development follows the Ferrari driver’s strong criticism of the FIA after he received a substantial penalty for being tardy to the national anthem at the previous race held at the Suzuka Circuit. Sainz, who was reportedly unwell with a stomach ailment during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend, explained he needed to use the restroom before proceeding to the starting grid.
Stewards Reduced Previous Penalty
Initially, the penalty for the prior infraction was set at £52,000 (€60,000). However, stewards reduced the punishment to £17,000 (€20,000) after reviewing medical evidence provided by Sainz’s doctors, with half of this revised amount subsequently suspended. This initial penalty sparked considerable debate within the Formula 1 paddock, prompting Sainz to publicly voice his discontent ahead of the third round of the season at the Sakhir International Circuit.
Sainz Defends Punctuality, Criticizes Fine Amount
During Thursday’s FIA press conference, Sainz stated, “I believe I am a strong advocate for punctuality and respectful conduct, particularly towards formal events like the national anthem which involves dignitaries.”
He continued, “I was the first to acknowledge my lateness and apologise, but being merely five seconds late and incurring a €10,000 fine is, in my opinion, unreasonable. I am unsure if I will receive another fine for expressing this sentiment, but these things happen; sometimes incidents occur.”
Concerns Over Fine Allocation
Sainz further commented on the financial penalty, saying, “It was an expensive consequence for a minor delay. You all are aware of the significance of €10,000. For being five seconds late, it is disappointing. I hope to learn where this €10,000 is allocated and learn if it is directed towards a benevolent cause. If so, I would be interested to know its destination.”

Further Sanction Possible Under New FIA Regulations
Sainz’s remarks regarding the fine and use of inappropriate language may lead to further repercussions. New regulations implemented by the FIA this season stipulate a £34,000 fine for such infractions.
FIA’s Stance on Driver Conduct
These new regulations are attributed to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s initiative to reinforce driver conduct regarding language. While Max Verstappen received a community service directive for a similar breach in the preceding season, financial penalties are now the mandated deterrent within Formula 1.
Contrast with World Rally Championship
To date, Formula 1 drivers have generally avoided fines under these new regulations, typically exercising caution with their language in official press settings. However, the World Rally Championship presents a contrasting scenario. Hyundai driver Adrien Fourmaux faced punishment following a brief television interview in Sweden, an incident that triggered outrage from numerous competitors across motorsport disciplines.
