Cannes Film Festival Unveils Star-Studded 2025 Lineup
PARIS— Excitement builds as the 78th Cannes Film Festival announces its official selection. New films from celebrated directors Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, and Richard Linklater are set to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or, festival organizers revealed Thursday. This year’s film festival lineup promises a wealth of cinematic talent and highly anticipated premieres.
Strong Contenders Vie for Palme d’Or
Building on the momentum of the 2024 festival, which produced the Academy Award-winning best picture “Anora” and several other Oscar-nominated films including “Emilia Pérez,” “The Substance,” and “The Apprentice,” the French film festival has curated a 2025 program brimming with renowned auteurs.
Thierry Frémaux, the Cannes Film Festival artistic director, presented the selections at a press conference in Paris alongside festival president Iris Knobloch.
Highlights of the Competition
Among the notable entries are:
- Aster’s “Eddington”: A Western set during a pandemic, featuring a stellar cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone.
- Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme”: Starring Benicio Del Toro as a European profiteer in what promises to be another visually distinctive work from the director.
- Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague”: An appropriately French-language film delving into the world of Jean-Luc Godard and the French New Wave cinema movement.
Returning Palme d’Or Winner and Festival Regulars
Julia Ducournau, who made history in 2021 by becoming only the second female filmmaker to win the Palme d’Or with “Titane,” will return to Cannes. Her new film, “Alpha,” is set in 1980s New York and centers on an 11-year-old dealing with a parent who has AIDS.

Other familiar faces at Cannes include Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, two-time Palme d’Or recipients. The Belgian filmmaking duo will present their latest work, “Young Mothers.” Joachim Trier, whose “The Worst Person in the World” was a standout at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, is also back in competition with “Sentimental Value,” again starring Renate Reinsve.
Special Screenings and Notable Absences
Outside of the main competition, Scarlett Johansson will present her directorial debut, “Eleanor the Great.”
However, some anticipated films were not included in the announcement. Terrence Malick’s long-awaited Jesus-themed drama “The Way of the Wind” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” were among those not selected for this year’s festival.
Festival Honors and Jury President
Cannes had previously announced that “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning” will premiere at the festival, continuing its tradition of showcasing major studio releases. Three years prior, the festival awarded an honorary Palme d’Or to Tom Cruise. This year, Robert De Niro is slated to receive the honorary award during the opening ceremony.
Following Greta Gerwig’s tenure, Juliette Binoche will preside over the jury responsible for selecting this year’s Palme d’Or winner. Knobloch noted that this marks the first time in 60 years that two women have consecutively held this prestigious position.
Festival Dates
The 78th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place from May 13th to 24th.
