Ukraine War: A Training Arena for America’s Adversaries, Commander Warns
A Ukrainian military leader has cautioned that America’s staunchest rivals are leveraging the conflict in Ukraine as a “proving ground.” They are using this as an opportunity to train their forces and hone their tactics in preparation for potential future confrontations with the West. The warning originates from a Ukrainian commander who has faced North Korean combatants in the Kursk region.
North Korean Forces Gaining Battlefield Experience
“North Koreans are making advancements by acquiring information and practical expertise here,” stated Captain Oleh Shyriaiev, commanding officer of Ukraine’s 225th Separate Assault Battalion.
“They are learning, and their learning is focused on adapting and implementing these insights on their own peninsula. The goal is to equip their own military with the knowledge gained in this war zone.”
Concerns Over Chinese Involvement
Shyriaiev’s warning follows reports indicating the presence of as many as 155 Chinese soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces.
In a phone interview with The Post from the Belgorod region of Russia, the site of a recent Ukrainian operation, Shyriaiev emphasized the urgency for global attention, particularly from the United States, to the activities of other adversaries in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Escalating Tensions and Future Threats
“The only predictable outcome is a worsening situation because North Korea has consistently demonstrated aspirations to seize control of the entire Korean peninsula. Our conflict essentially serves as their training ground for achieving that objective,” he elaborated.
“It is regrettable that my nation has become a testing ground for warfare, a space where active combat is taking place,” he added.
Chinese Nationals Captured Fighting for Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on Tuesday the capture of two Chinese citizens who were fighting for Russian forces in eastern Ukraine. Reports suggest that up to six individuals from the same unit have been observed fighting for Moscow.
By Wednesday, Ukrainian intelligence reports indicated that as many as 155 Chinese nationals were listed on Moscow’s military rosters as combatants against Kyiv, according to Zelensky.
“We are gathering intelligence and suspect there are considerably more,” Zelensky stated, pointing out that Russia has been actively promoting recruitment advertisements on Chinese social media platforms.
“These individuals arrive in the Russian Federation, specifically Moscow. They undergo medical evaluations lasting three to four days, followed by training programs that span one to two months, before deployment to fight on Ukrainian territory,” he detailed.
Beijing’s Response and Denials
The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on Wednesday that they were “verifying” Ukraine’s claims regarding Chinese citizens captured while fighting for Russia. Zelensky noted that those captured possessed complete identification, including Chinese credit cards.
However, Beijing has denied any official deployment of troops to Ukraine.
“Allow me to emphasize that the Chinese government consistently urges Chinese citizens to steer clear of areas of armed conflict, to abstain from any form of involvement in armed conflicts, and specifically to avoid participation in any military operations conducted by any party,” stated Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian.
Intelligence Gathering in Modern Warfare
Shyriaiev suggested that the presence of Chinese soldiers is likely connected to intelligence collection regarding contemporary warfare tactics, as China, similar to North Korea, lacks recent direct combat experience.
“I believe China is engaged in a form of research and development throughout this war. Their objective includes gaining practical battlefield experience,” he explained. “Russia is a logical partner for this endeavor, as Russia has limited options for cooperation outside of these nations with similar political systems.”
Analysis Suggests Independent Actors
However, analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in Washington propose an alternative perspective. They believe it is more probable that Chinese citizens joining the Russian military are doing so independently, without Beijing’s official endorsement.
North Korea’s Active Role
Despite this, George Barros, the Russia team lead at ISW, emphasized the considerable interest that foreign adversaries would have in joining Moscow’s military campaign to acquire firsthand experience in modern combat scenarios.
“In contrast to the Chinese, the North Koreans are undeniably active participants alongside Russia in this war,” he asserted.
“There are officers and infantry personnel present. They are learning, and technical knowledge is being exchanged,” he added.
NATO and the Emerging Threat Landscape
Barros cautioned that this accumulated experience could pose a future threat to NATO.
“Ironically, North Korea currently possesses more practical, real-world experience in conducting large-scale operations and contemporary warfare than the United States and any NATO member nation,” he stated.
Ukraine Conflict: A Study in Modern Warfare
Military strategists are closely scrutinizing the conflict in Ukraine due to its unique blend of established strategies such as trench warfare, combined with advanced and formidable technologies, notably ballistic drones.
“North Korea’s motivation for deploying its troops to this conflict is to gain practical knowledge in modern warfare, as this represents the most technologically advanced warfare environment currently,” the Ukrainian captain noted.
North Korean Adaptation to Modern Tactics
Shyriaiev observed clear signs of North Korean forces adapting their strategies based on their experiences in Kursk. In initial encounters, they displayed unfamiliarity with drone technology and primarily relied on conventional weaponry, appearing less prepared for Ukraine’s contemporary combat methods.
However, in subsequent engagements with North Korean troops, Shyriaiev noted their enhanced preparedness for modern warfare.
“We managed to maintain our positions due to our readiness. However, by that point, they had begun to adopt our warfare methods, and those of the Russians, incorporating unmanned aerial vehicles,” he explained.
North Korean Progress in Modern Warfare
“They provided support to their infantry by deploying explosives, demonstrating clear progress,” Shyriaiev added.
“They are equipped with Russian uniforms and utilize Russian weaponry. Critically, they are gaining invaluable first-hand experience in waging a modern war.”
