Plant-based waterproof material could replace single-use plastics

Biodegradable Paperboard Offers Sustainable Alternative to Plastic Cups

A novel, plant-derived material, engineered to rapidly decompose in marine environments, presents a promising eco-friendly substitute for conventional single-use plastics often found in items like cups and straws. This innovative transparent paperboard aims to mitigate plastic pollution and offer a more sustainable option for disposable food and beverage containers.

Transparent Paperboard: A Cellulose-Based Innovation

Similar to cellophane, this transparent paperboard is crafted from cellulose, the fundamental structural component of plant cell walls. Historically, stiffening cellophane for broader applications beyond flexible packaging was hindered by the coagulant chemicals employed in its production.

Researchers at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), led by Noriyuki Isobe, have made a significant breakthrough. They discovered that treating cellulose with a lithium bromide solution eliminates the necessity for a coagulant. Instead, the material can simply be allowed to air-dry, simplifying the manufacturing process and broadening its potential uses.

Sustainable and Shapeable Material

“We have successfully developed a regenerated cellulose material utilizing this solvent system,” explains Isobe. “This material is not only easily moldable into various shapes but also holds substantial promise as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics, addressing growing environmental concerns.”

Performance and Waterproofing

Experiments conducted by the research team demonstrated the practical capabilities of transparent paperboard. A cup constructed from this material effectively contained freshly boiled water for over three hours with minimal leakage. Further enhancing its functionality, the application of a coating derived from plant-based fatty acid salt rendered the cup completely waterproof, making it suitable for a wider range of liquid-based applications.

vCard QR Code

vCard.red is a free platform for creating a mobile-friendly digital business cards. You can easily create a vCard and generate a QR code for it, allowing others to scan and save your contact details instantly.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

Recycled and Upcycled Potential

The production process of this innovative material accommodates both recycled and upcycled cellulose sources, including repurposed textiles like discarded clothing. This versatility enhances its sustainability profile by reducing reliance on virgin materials and promoting circular economy principles.

Biodegradability in Marine Environments

To assess its environmental impact, Isobe and his colleagues rigorously tested the material’s degradation properties in the ocean. Results indicated complete decomposition within 300 days in deep-sea conditions, with even faster degradation rates observed in shallower waters. This rapid breakdown addresses a key concern associated with plastic waste accumulation in oceans.

Expert Perspective on Single-Use Alternatives

Bhavna Middha from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia acknowledges the benefits of a paper-based substitute for plastic. However, she expresses certain reservations regarding the extensive use of single-use items as a general solution to waste management.

“While a paper-based alternative is welcome,” Middha comments, “it’s crucial to reconsider the widespread acceptance of single-use materials. Limitations should be considered, reserving single-use disposable materials primarily for essential applications, such as within the medical sector where hygiene and disposability are paramount.”
