Onana and Matic Engage in War of Words Ahead of Europa League Clash
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has responded to criticism from Nemanja Matic, escalating tensions before their Europa League quarter-final first leg match against Lyon. The verbal exchange between the two players began after Onana’s pre-match remarks, adding extra intrigue to the upcoming fixture.
Onana’s Initial Comments Sparked Controversy
The disagreement originated from Onana’s press conference comments prior to the Manchester United squad’s travel to France. The Cameroonian international stated, “Of course it’s not going to be easy but I think we are way better than them.” This assertion appears to have stirred discontent within the Lyon team, particularly prompting a sharp reaction from Matic.
Matic’s Sharp Rebuke
Nemanja Matic, a former Manchester United player with nearly 200 appearances over five seasons before joining Lyon in January, delivered a scathing response to Onana’s statements. When questioned about Onana’s assessment, Matic remarked, “If you’re considered one of the least impressive goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history then you should be careful about your pronouncements.”
Matic further elaborated, emphasizing the stature of former United goalkeeping legends: “If David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin van der Sar had voiced such opinions, I would reconsider my viewpoint. However, considering your statistical ranking among Manchester United’s less successful modern goalkeepers, perhaps demonstrating your abilities on the field would be more appropriate than making bold statements.”
Onana’s Trophy Counter-Attack
Within hours, Onana issued a rejoinder to Matic’s criticism, highlighting Matic’s lack of silverware during his tenure at Old Trafford. In a post on social media platform X, Onana wrote, “I would never disrespect any other club.”

“We understand that the forthcoming match will be challenging against a formidable opponent. Our focus is on delivering a performance that will satisfy our supporters. Importantly, I have won trophies with the world’s greatest club, a feat some cannot claim.”
Onana’s point alludes to his FA Cup triumph with Manchester United the previous season, culminating in a 2-1 victory against Manchester City in the final held at Wembley Stadium.
Manchester United’s Europa League Ambitions
The Red Devils are aiming to recover some positivity from a largely disappointing season by pursuing success in the Europa League. This competition has offered some respite for new manager Ruben Amorim. In the previous round, they convincingly defeated Real Sociedad 5-2 on aggregate in the round of 16.
Lyon’s Domestic Form
While Manchester United are facing difficulties in the Premier League, Lyon’s domestic campaign in France is also showing inconsistencies. Having secured victories in only half of their 28 Ligue 1 fixtures, they currently occupy fifth position in the league standings, trailing behind Strasbourg.
