Masters Par Three: McIlroy’s Daughter Poppy Steals Hearts at Augusta

The annual Masters Par Three Tournament at Augusta National witnessed a heartwarming moment as Rory McIlroy’s four-year-old daughter, Poppy, stole the show. On the eve of the 89th Masters, young Poppy delighted the assembled patrons by sinking a remarkable long putt, adding a delightful family element to the pre-tournament festivities.

A Family Affair at Augusta National

The Northern Irish golf star proudly assisted Poppy in achieving her impressive birdie putt on the final hole of the relaxed, family-focused Par Three competition held before the Masters officially commences. McIlroy later expressed his joy, describing the moment as “very cool” and clearly relishing the lighthearted atmosphere.

“It’s simply a fantastic afternoon,” McIlroy commented, emphasizing the convivial spirit of the event. “Being out there with close friends like Shane [Lowry] and Tommy [Fleetwood] and our families is wonderful. Seeing the children enjoy themselves is the most important aspect.”

McIlroy, seeking his first green jacket to complete a career grand slam at this year’s Masters, further elaborated on the event’s significance in his preparation. “It’s a truly pleasant way to conclude the lead-up to the serious competition of the week. Participating in this is genuinely enjoyable and a welcome tradition,” he remarked.

“After a nine-month interval since the last major, ending the preparation period with such an enjoyable afternoon is ideal,” the 35-year-old golfer stated. “If you’re not prepared by this point, your chance is likely diminished. Now, it’s about embracing the fun, returning home for dinner, and resting to be ready for Thursday’s opening round.”

Other Highlights from the Par Three Course

The traditional Masters curtain-raiser also provided other charming scenes. Jordan Spieth, the 2015 Masters champion, was seen playfully cautioning his young daughter, Sophie, against eating the course grass. Spieth was supported by his wife, Annie, who acted as his caddie. Max Homa participated alongside Spieth, with his two-year-old son, Cam, adorably dressed in a miniature white caddie outfit, also joining in the fun.

Homa had enlisted his fellow player, Wyndham Clark, to transport a children’s putter to Georgia, due to luggage constraints. “I felt like I was carrying something incredibly precious,” Clark jested to ESPN+ after delivering the club. Adding to the lighthearted moments, Jon Rahm’s son, Kepa, playfully attempted to get his ball in the hole from a distance by almost kicking it.

Echavarria Wins, History Remains Unchanged

In competitive terms, Nico Echavarria emerged as the Par Three Tournament victor, overcoming American JJ Spaun in a playoff decided on the second extra hole. However, history suggests this victory may not foreshadow Masters success. Since the Par Three Tournament’s inception in 1960, no winner has ever proceeded to win the coveted green jacket in the same week. This playoff defeat also marked another setback for Spaun, who previously lost to McIlroy in a playoff at the Players Championship last month.

Holes-in-One and Legendary Charm

The Par Three Tournament was punctuated by displays of golfing brilliance, with US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and major winner Brooks Koepka both achieving holes-in-one on the sixth hole. Tom Hoge, another American player, also recorded an ace on the fourth. Adding a touch of Masters legend to the day, 89-year-old, three-time Masters champion Gary Player delighted the gallery with an impromptu dance on the first Par Three hole at Augusta.
