Trevor Lawrence to Take it Slow During Offseason Recovery

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will proceed cautiously this offseason as he recuperates from a shoulder injury that prematurely ended his previous season. The signal-caller is focused on a full recovery and preparing for the upcoming NFL season.

Limited Spring Activities for Lawrence

According to the Jacksonville Jaguars organization, as reported by ESPN, Trevor Lawrence’s participation will be restricted during spring practices. This limitation is part of his ongoing recovery from surgery to repair the AC joint in his non-throwing shoulder.

Expected Full Clearance by Training Camp

Currently, the timeline for Lawrence’s rehabilitation indicates he is expected to receive full medical clearance by the time training camp commences in the summer. This positive prognosis allows for a focused and measured approach to his offseason program.

Cautious Approach to Throwing Program

Jaguars coach Liam Coen stated that there is no definitive plan yet regarding the extent of throwing activities for the former Clemson standout. However, Lawrence’s recovery and training are being carefully monitored by both the team’s medical personnel and his personal strength and conditioning coach.

‘As we progress, we are optimistic about reaching our desired goals,’ Coen commented on Wednesday.

‘He will be under a throwing limit as part of his protocol. Regarding his benchmarks, there are specific milestones he needs to achieve before he can progress to full-speed activities on the field. However, everything is progressing positively. He is feeling very good currently, which is encouraging.’

Surgery and Optimistic Outlook

Lawrence underwent surgery on December 17th and was observed wearing a sling throughout January.

‘We don’t have a game until the fall, so naturally, I anticipate being ready well before then. I am very optimistic that I will be completely ready for the season,’ Lawrence stated confidently.

He further elaborated, ‘I am engaging in throwing exercises, gradually advancing and increasing distance and volume of throws. The focus is on being intelligent and avoiding rushing back too quickly. It’s about progressively building up to full readiness.’

Injury History and Focus on Footwork

The franchise quarterback, entering his fifth NFL season this September, initially injured his shoulder last November.

He was sidelined for two games but returned to play against the Houston Texans in December. During that game, he sustained a concussion following a forceful hit from linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.

Lawrence was cleared from concussion protocols on December 15th, just two days before his scheduled surgery.

Notably, the former Pro Bowler has a history of injuries to the same shoulder. He previously underwent surgery in February 2021 to repair a torn labrum prior to his rookie season in the league.

Refining Fundamentals During Recovery

Coach Coen indicated that Lawrence will dedicate time to refining his footwork during this period, an area the coach believes needs improvement for the seasoned player.

‘If you possess solid core fundamentals and footwork that you trust, especially in critical situations, it provides a reliable foundation and promotes composed decision-making,’ Coen explained.

‘This period, with a slight restriction on throwing, presents an excellent opportunity to delve into footwork. He can concentrate on it independently and diligently work on this aspect.’

‘He is committed to it. We strongly believe that enhancing this area can contribute to his continued progress. Ultimately, we anticipate it translating to improved performance on game days.’

Fine-Tuning Performance

Coen added, ‘He is exceptionally talented and has executed remarkable plays in crucial moments, orchestrating significant comebacks. He has played through pain and accomplished many positive things.’

‘Now, it’s about refining those skills and making subtle adjustments to ensure he is consistently comfortable releasing the ball accurately and rhythmically, irrespective of the game circumstances.’

Lawrence acknowledges the importance of this focus area: ‘I think they’ve done an exceptional job designing this [offensive] system to thoughtfully integrate quarterback footwork.’

‘That’s been a key point of discussion, and it necessitates some adjustments, like stance changes – subtle adjustments that might go unnoticed by many, but they are significant. Having ingrained a vast number of repetitions the previous way, I must now accumulate these new reps and diligently practice so that I’m fully prepared when camp begins.’
