Framework Laptop 12 US Preorders Delayed Due to Tariff Concerns

Framework, the manufacturer of modular and repairable laptops, has announced a postponement of US preorders for its highly anticipated Laptop 12. The company cited ongoing evaluation of the impact of recently imposed tariffs as the reason for the delay. While the Framework Laptop 12 launch will proceed for customers in Canada and Europe, as initially planned, US consumers will need to wait longer for this new convertible notebook.

Laptop 12: A Compact and Adaptable Design

The Laptop 12 represents Framework’s most compact design to date and marks their entry into the convertible touchscreen market. This new model boasts a 13th Gen Intel Core i3 or i5 processor, a 1920×1200 resolution touchscreen display with stylus compatibility, and configurable options including up to 48GB of RAM and 2TB of internal storage. Staying true to Framework’s design principles, the Laptop 12 maintains a modular and easily repairable architecture. Furthermore, it will be available in pastel pink and mint color finishes.

Pricing and Positioning

Although official pricing details are yet to be disclosed, Framework has positioned the 12-inch laptop as an “entry-level” option, suggesting a more budget-friendly price point compared to the existing Laptop 13. For context, the Laptop 13 currently starts at $899 for the DIY edition and $1,099 for the pre-assembled version. This pricing structure follows a recent adjustment where Framework temporarily suspended sales of certain more affordable Laptop 13 configurations in the US market. This measure was taken to mitigate potential financial losses resulting from the newly implemented tariffs.

Tariff Implications on Framework’s Operations

Framework’s manufacturing operations are based in Taiwan, which is now subject to a 32 percent tariff. In a statement on Bluesky, the company explained that their initial response to these tariffs involves “reversible” actions such as product delistings and postponements. Framework emphasized its commitment to avoiding price increases for consumers “until we have final confirmation that there is no alternative,” highlighting their efforts to absorb costs where possible.

International Preorder Launch

Preorders for the Laptop 12 will commence today at 1 PM ET for customers in Canada, Europe, Australia, and Taiwan. Pricing information is scheduled to be released concurrently with the start of preorders in these regions.
