Revolutionary Smart Toothbrush Automates Oral Hygiene and Scans for Dental Issues

Many individuals may not be effectively brushing their teeth, potentially missing areas, shortening brushing time, or lacking consistency. However, a cutting-edge solution has emerged: the Feno Smartbrush, a $299 full-mouth electric toothbrush engineered to automate teeth brushing while utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to scan for potential oral health problems. This innovative dental hygiene device aims to enhance user brushing technique and proactively monitor for issues.

The $299 Feno Smartbrush brushes your teeth for you. Accompanying technology scans your mouth for signs of problems.

Dr. Kenny Brown, CEO and co-founder of Feno, emphasized the critical link between oral and systemic health. “The mouth serves as the gateway to the body. Prioritizing its care positively impacts our overall well-being. Oral health extends beyond just achieving whiter, straighter teeth; it is integral to systemic wellness,” Dr. Brown, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, explained.

Introduced last summer, the smartbrush comprises a U-shaped mouthpiece featuring approximately 18,000 nylon bristles, a handle to secure the brush, and a charging base.

While its appearance may be unconventional, resembling exaggerated dentures reminiscent of “The Mask,” the device is reportedly gaining popularity, particularly among tech-savvy men seeking convenience. Dr. Brown indicated growing interest from women as well, although specific customer numbers were not disclosed.

“It’s important to self-assess your brushing habits,” Dr. Brown advised prospective customers. “Are you confident in your brushing technique regarding duration, pressure, motion, and consistent repetition? Feno is designed to bridge this gap.”

vCard QR Code

vCard.red is a free platform for creating a mobile-friendly digital business cards. You can easily create a vCard and generate a QR code for it, allowing others to scan and save your contact details instantly.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

Dr. Kenny Brown, Feno’s CEO and co-founder, launched the smartbrush last summer.

Smartbrush Functionality: A Detailed Look

The process begins with users submitting mouth photographs to Feno to ensure correct mouthpiece sizing.

Leveraging data from over 20,000 dental scans, the California-based company engineered the mouthpiece to optimize bristle contact across all dental surfaces.

The $299 package includes the customized mouthpiece, handle, charging unit, three toothpaste tubes formulated for foaming, a tongue scraper, and a complimentary month of Feno Plus membership.

Following a brief instructional video and device charging, the Smartbrush is ready for use.

Effortless Operation and Personalized Oral Health Insights

Operation involves applying mint-flavored foam to the bristles, initiating the device, and gently moving it in a circular motion. The device automatically stops after 20 seconds, signifying completion of the cleaning cycle.

Vibration intensity is adjustable, reaching up to 250 oscillations per 20-second interval. Dr. Brown mentioned some users prefer dedicated 20-second cycles for both upper and lower teeth.

The Feno Plus subscription, priced at $9.95 monthly, enables users to monitor their dental health. A scanner integrated within the handle captures detailed oral images, which are then analyzed to deliver personalized health feedback and guidance.

Dr. Brown clarified that the generated reports can highlight potential issues like receding gums, soft tissue lesions, and tooth discoloration, but they are not a replacement for professional dental check-ups.

Feno Smartbrush: Key Advantages

Brown said Feno is more effective than other full-coverage toothbrushes because the mouthpiece is properly sized to the mouth, nylon is stronger than traditional silicone bristles and the motor in the device “delivers a sweeping motion with the proper brushing technique.”

Electric toothbrushes generally provide superior cleaning compared to manual brushing; however, U-shaped automatic electric brushes have faced scrutiny regarding their effectiveness.

A 2020 Italian study, predating the Feno Smartbrush, suggested these U-shaped brushes might not effectively eliminate dental plaque.

Dr. Joseph Brofsky, head of pediatric dentistry at Northwell Health, commented, “Using an electric U-shaped toothbrush may not be as effective as using a conventional toothbrush.” He added, “While the concept of simultaneous teeth cleaning is logical, the practical results might be lacking.” Dr. Brofsky was not involved in the 2020 study.

Dr. Brown asserts Feno’s enhanced effectiveness due to custom-sized mouthpieces, more durable nylon bristles compared to silicone, and a motor engineered to deliver optimal sweeping motions for proper brushing.

Potential Limitations of the Smartbrush

Feno Smartbrush is not universally suitable. Dr. Brown advised against its use for individuals with braces, temporary dental crowns, or children under 15 due to incomplete adult dental development.

New users might experience initial gum bleeding lasting three to five days.

“This typically arises as the brush reaches areas of the gum line that may have previously been insufficiently stimulated,” Dr. Brown explained.

Brown hopes the smartbrush evolves in a few ways.

Compatibility requires a smartphone running at least iOS 11.0 or Android 5.0 for mouth image capture, app download, and personalized recommendations.

The fundamental cleaning function of the brush remains independent of the app and AI features, which primarily enhance access to data and awareness of oral health, according to Dr. Brown.

Cost presents another consideration. Feno recommends mouthpiece replacement every three months to minimize bacterial accumulation.

“We observe users extending mouthpiece use beyond the recommendation,” Dr. Brown noted. “While the mouthpiece is durable, we advise three-month replacements for optimal hygiene.”

Future Developments for Feno

New versions of the device will have a longer battery life and be easier to pack in a suitcase, Brown said.

Dr. Brown outlined anticipated product improvements.

Expanding mouthpiece size options and accommodating children, individuals with missing teeth, and brace wearers are key priorities.

Introducing additional foam toothpaste flavors beyond the current mint option is also planned, addressing user preferences for varied tastes.

Future iterations of the device will incorporate extended battery life and improved portability for travel, Dr. Brown stated.

Furthermore, plans are underway to distribute Feno Smartbrush through retail stores and dental practices.

Beyond the toothbrush, Feno is exploring supplementary oral care products, such as breath-freshening lozenges or mints designed to promote oral health.

“This is an area of active development for us,” Dr. Brown concluded.
