Ukraine Seeks Clarification from Beijing After Chinese Nationals Captured Fighting for Russia
Kyiv is seeking clarification from Beijing following the capture of two Chinese citizens by Ukrainian forces. The individuals were reportedly fighting alongside Russian troops in the eastern Donetsk region, as stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Concerns Over Chinese Involvement
President Zelenskyy indicated that the captured individuals are believed to be among a larger contingent of Chinese nationals serving within the Russian military. He accused the Kremlin of attempting to involve Beijing in the ongoing conflict, either directly or indirectly. Estimates suggest that several hundred Chinese citizens may have travelled to participate in the war as mercenaries, joining others from Nepal and Central Asian nations in supporting the Russian army.
US Expresses Disquiet
Tammy Bruce, spokesperson for the US State Department, described this development as “disturbing,” and asserted that “China is a significant enabler of Russia in the war in Ukraine.”
Russian Drone Attacks Target Dnipro and Kharkiv
In a separate development, massive Russian drone attacks were launched against the Ukrainian cities of Dnipro and Kharkiv on Tuesday night. Local officials reported that these attacks ignited fires and resulted in injuries to at least 17 individuals. Kramatorsk, a city situated in the eastern Donetsk region – the epicenter of the protracted conflict – also endured an attack in a residential area, causing injuries to residents. Serhiy Lysak, the governor of Dnipropetrovsk region, communicated via Telegram that the assault in Dnipro triggered a blaze, damaged residences and vehicles, and wounded 14 people.
Russia Claims Gains in Kursk Region
Moscow has announced that it is nearing complete control over the western Kursk region, claiming to have dislodged Ukrainian forces from their remaining positions there. The Russian defence ministry released footage purportedly showing the recapture of Guyevo. The video, accompanied by dramatic music, depicted smoke emanating from buildings, a soldier displaying a Russian flag from a damaged church window, and Russian soldiers conducting house-to-house searches. While Ukrainian officials have not issued statements regarding these Russian claims, the Ukrainian general staff stated that their aircraft had targeted a complex of hangars and military structures in the Kursk region, allegedly used by Russian drone operators and maintenance personnel.

The US Senate has confirmed Elbridge Colby as a senior policy advisor at the Pentagon, despite apprehensions regarding his past remarks perceived as downplaying threats posed by Russia and President Vladimir Putin. Colby had previously cast doubt on whether Russia had actually invaded Ukraine, echoing rhetoric frequently used by the Kremlin to spread disinformation. Despite initially avoiding direct answers about his belief on the invasion, Colby eventually acknowledged that Russia did invade Ukraine after facing persistent questioning.
