British Woman Dies in Campervan Accident During Australian Storm
Eleanor Thompson, 35, originally from Mold, Wales, was working in hospitality and travelling in her campervan when Cyclone Alfred, packing winds of up to 100mph, impacted Australia last month.
The incident took place in Burringbar, New South Wales, on March 8, as confirmed by a recent inquest hearing. The region was severely affected when the intense storm hit.
Local authorities had issued warnings for residents to remain indoors, emphasizing the dangers and potential risks to both the public and emergency responders during the severe weather conditions.
Details of the Incident
According to Senior Coroner John Gittins, Ms. Thompson’s father reported that she was in a relatively isolated location and was believed to be seeking refuge from the cyclone.

Initial reports suggest she exited her campervan, at which point the vehicle may have rolled, leading to fatal injuries during the height of the storm.
A post-mortem examination conducted in Australia determined that Ms. Thompson’s death was the result of ‘multiple injuries’ sustained in the accident.
Mr. Gittins indicated that the full inquest proceedings might face delays as further investigations are required to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Gold Coast Damage and Recovery Efforts
The mayor of the Gold Coast reported significant coastal erosion, stating that ’80 per cent of our beach is gone’ due to the cyclone, which was later reclassified as a tropical storm. In response, a sand pumping barge was deployed to the region to address the substantial damage.
