Italy and Greece travel warning: Aviation worker strikes set to impact flights tomorrow

Importance Score: 55 / 100 🔵

Air travel across Europe is bracing for significant disruption this week as aviation sector employees in Italy and Greece are set to stage walkouts. These strikes, planned for Tuesday, 9 April, threaten to create widespread flight delays and cancellations, potentially impacting holidaymakers during the UK school break and those commencing Easter holiday travel.

European Air Travel Braces for Strike Disruption

Passengers are strongly advised to meticulously verify their flight status and anticipate possible delays and cancellations in light of the impending industrial action.

Italy: EasyJet Cabin Crew to Strike

EasyJet cabin crew members, associated with Italian trade unions FILT, CGIL, and UIL, are scheduled to participate in strike action on 9 April. The walkout is planned to occur between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm CET.

This industrial action is anticipated to cause repercussions for certain flights arriving at and departing from Milan and Naples airports.

In a statement to UK newspaper The Independent, the airline affirmed, “We want to reassure our customers that we are making every effort to lessen any disturbances resulting from the strike. Should any flights be affected, we will directly contact customers with available options to assist them in reorganising their itineraries.”

Greece: Air Traffic Controller Strike Action

Compounding the travel turmoil, the Italian industrial action coincides with planned strikes in Greece, potentially exacerbating travel disruption throughout the European continent.

Greek air traffic controllers are proceeding with a 24-hour strike on 9 April, called by the public sector employee federation ADEDY.

ADEDY’s demands include the reinstatement of holiday bonus pay, actual wage increases, and measures to address Greece’s housing crisis.

“Regrettably, the state of air traffic control in Greece is precarious, marked by staff shortages and equipment malfunctions. These issues have precipitated significant delays in recent years, and are expected to continue doing so this year as well,” the Greek Air Traffic Controllers’ Association conveyed to The Independent.

The association further indicated that during the walkout, staff will limit flight handling to essential services. These encompass medical and search and rescue operations, humanitarian aid, military flights, and emergency situations, according to Greek media outlets.

Consequently, commercial flights to and from Greece are expected to bear the main impact of the disruption.

Passengers are once again urged to consistently monitor their flight statuses and brace for potential delays and cancellations.
